We saw a smaller member of the potoo family, Northern Potoo , Nyctibius jamaicensis , at Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, boating and birding the Salado River. I had seen Thick-Knees in South Africa, but I was very excited to see this species, which is the only member of its family found in Central America.

The hunt was on in earnest. For the past couple years an apparent Costa’s x Lucifer Hummingbird hybrid had been present at Ash Canyon. This one was not an individual you’d mistake for a pure bird by any means, as it mostly resembled the Black-chinned side of the family in size and structure. The last missing piece.

If you see a flock of kestrels in southern Europe, then the chances are that they will be Lessers, for the Common Kestrel never flocks, though occasionally in summer you will see a family hunting together. Last month I visited three Andalucian cities with colonies of Lesser Kestrels: Arcos de la Frontera, Marchena and Carmona.

It was surprising therefore to find one White-necked Heron , one White-faced Heron and a Black-fronted Dotterel present. The quarry was being used as a training ground for a family of five Brown Falcons and they were amazing to watch as they used the quarry walls to hunt. Rainbow Bee-eater. Crocodiles. Crimson Finch.

With the proposed hunting seasons on sandhill cranes being discussed in Tennessee, Kentucky and Wisconsin, we must not forget the whooping crane, which travels and winters in the big sandhill crane flocks. Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call. I knew I’d never heard that before.

The wonderful family Meropidae contains 27 dazzling species, of which Africa is endowed with no less than 20 species, the balance occurring across Asia and with one as far afield as Australia. After breeding they also disperse over the rainforests and savannas of West and Central Africa, where they hunt for aerial insects.

There were good numbers of Green Pygmy-geese, Comb-crested Jacana, Great and Intermediate Egrets, Magpie Geese and a family of Black-necked Storks. Wildfowl hunting season has recently started in the Northern Territory and no doubt there are a few Magpie Geese that have decided to move here rather than get shot at in the hunting reserves.

On my recent short family vacation to Miami, I was granted a single day to get out and really bird like a madman. One of the species he called out, Red-masked Parakeet , was present in numbers and nesting at the location. Carlos even had a cooler in the trunk to keep the pie cool until we met up with my family!

There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek. Foxes were introduced to Australia in 1855 for hunting and have established themselves far and wide. These strange birds are two species in their own family; White-necked or Yellow-headed, endemic to the Upper Guinea forests and Grey-necked or Red-headed, restricted to Lower Guinea forests. Although the larger, edible birds are all but gone from most of Ghana’s forests, as mentioned, the birding was superb.
