With them were about 40 White-rumped Sandpipers ( Calidris fuscicollis ) , and families of both Semipalmated ( Charadrius semipalmatus ) and Common-ringed Plovers ( Charadrius hiaticula ). Ermine will hunt lemmings under the snow, haunting them in their lairs.

We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family.

It’s actually a pretty classic example of convergent evolution, wherein two unrelated families of lifeforms evolve to fill the same niche independently. The provision of housing and food is most gratifying, I have successfully spread this joy to one of my three neighbors, who now gleefully sends me pictures of the Cocoa Thrush family on his front porch, and Green Iguanas lounging in his avocado tree. Each year, I alert him to the arrival of our guest of honor – a female Yellow Warbler.

Wedge-tailed Eagles roam the skies, along with Brown Falcon, Black Kites , and Nankeen Kestrels. Speaking of Brown Falcons, here are a couple that were perched just outside Ulara. A day with Murray Hunt on the Daintree River, and a visit to the Great Barrier Reef, and standing all alone on Michaelmas Cay.

The quarry was being used as a training ground for a family of five Brown Falcons and they were amazing to watch as they used the quarry walls to hunt. They were able to survive on what little food there was on offer and would no doubt soon be moving on. An almost dry quarry.
