A couple of months ago I took a true pelagic trip off the coast of Peru. Even after seeing the silhouette of a distant and fast fading Waved Albatros, a bird I wanted see so badly, I was not convinced about the experience. Birding pelagic birding Peru Surbound' Birding is supposed to be fun.

One of my highlight stories was my first experience with the sounds of a Rufescent Tiger-Heron. During my first few knights in the rainforest of eastern Peru, I knew nothing about animal vocalizations. Lots of insects vocalizing at a time was one cool experience. Needless to say the sounds of the night were overwhelming.

This last December, I had the chance to bird the rainforest of Southeastern Peru, as part of the second International Birding Rally in Southeastern Peru. Adam and Tim are experienced Florida birders with varying degrees of experience when birding the Tropical Rainforests. Many of these birds were lifers for them.

They offer multiple packages and we took a five day trip that took us right down to the border with Peru. My wife and I took a little vacation back in February to scout this river boat service; it was one of those experiences that will always bring back many good memories and great birds.

Alfredo Begazo grew up with Peruvian Meadowlarks and Marvelous Spatuletails, and was used to waking up to the morning choruses of Pacific Doves in Lima, Peru. Alfredo, an experienced birder in Peru and well-rounded naturalist, founded a birding and nature eco-travel company , known as Surbound Expeditions (Sur=Spanish for south).

So, beside a lot of birds and the sunny sky, I want the coldest thing to experience year-round to be my beer. Peru (1807 / 1761). While I do enjoy the first snow of the season, the second snow is a different matter. As is every one after it. Which leaves me with quite a few choices – practically the entire tropical belt, right?

I savor the timeless experience of scanning these tropical waves for storm-petrels and lost jaegers. It’s such a great resource, I can go over woodcreeper songs, test myself to see which vocalizations I still remember from the ridiculously diverse rainforests of Tambopata, Peru.

The ones in Costa Rica don’t sound like those in South America so keep that in mind if you have already seen it in, say, Southeastern Peru. Ochre-breasted Antpitta : Ok, I have to admit that I’m less sure about this one being different from the taxa often seen by birders in Mindo, Colombia, and Peru.

A particular location, such as Manu National Park in Peru where Tergorgh conducted most of his bird studies, can pack a staggering number of species, but the number of territories that each species held within the extensive study area was quite low. Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience.
