With more than 312 so far recorded bird species, Lake Kerkini National Park offers great birding year-round. Birdwise, it turned out to be a good one and my year list was almost 400 species long, which made me happy… almost. The Lesser White-fronted Goose is one of the most threatened waterfowl species of the Western Palearctic, with illegal killing being the most important threat globally. The solution? The Kerkini Lake.

According to eBird, there have been approximately 270 species seen at the hotspot that includes the harbor. The evening of September 7, 2012 was a truly memorable birding experience. I just happened to be there to experience it. Of course, unexpected experiences such as this are one of the great appeals of birding.

I saw 863 species of birds, bringing my life list to 1,820. Such travel brings a lot of birds and the 863 species I saw this year is the most species I have ever seen. How can I narrow down the eight-hundred-sixty-three species to ten? How can I, by listing only ten, call eight-hundred-fifty-three species not worthy?

We still observed 45 species of birds in the reserve in about an hour and there are always raptors to observe as well as the usual water birds. The Australian Pelican obviously decided it was safe to continue on with its feeding after the incident and observed the crocodile consuming the Magpie Goose.

I could see a few Brown Pelicans in the distance, cruising, then sharply banking into a sudden dive. Some call it a preference for the journey rather than the destination. This diversity makes for a very unique birding experience. In addition to the hundred or so species of birds I regularly find here, there are Desert Foxes, Bobcats, Mountain Lions, Desert Bighorn Sheep and Mule Deer. Brown Pelicans. In my experience non-birders connect with the travel, visiting beautiful places and spectacle of birding and hawkwatching often entails all three. In my experience if you show a non or novice birder their first Bald Eagle and they will be amazed, show someone their first Thayer’s Gull and they aren’t likely to gasp (sorry, larophiles)!

We went for a wander to see what species were further upstream and accidentally flushed a Barking Owl. There are several bird species here that you won’t see in the Broome area, so it is definitely worth a look.

This picture actually has three species of shearwater in it - Pink-footed , Sooty , and Black-vented. It was truly an amazing experience only lessened by the fact that Desi slept through the whole thing. Though they haven’t rated a mention thus far, Brown Pelicans were everywhere and are awesome.

The flowerpecker, an attractive species, was actually responsible for Peter becoming a birder in the first place! Our next species was decidedly uncommon, a Black-headed Ibis circled overhead for a minute before flying off. I’m a big fan of babblers, and this was a particularly special species.
