The ability to feel pain is not an obviously plausible way of morally distinguishing microorganisms from other organisms. Killing a hog can be avoided.

Preference utilitarians count the killing of a being with a preference for continued life as worse than the killing of a being without any such preference. For a non-self-conscious being, death is the cessation of experiences, in much the same way that birth is the beginning of experiences. It is self-consciousness.

There's not enough evidence for an accusation of moral relativism, but for me the message is a mixed one. But this plate also holds all of the animals that were killed for your serving of sushi. Killing an animal oneself is more often than not a way to forget the problem while pretending to remember. This is very silly.
