His large pouty eyes, silky fur-coat, and silly little paws on which he fumbled all over the hay-covered kennel, lured me in like a dog to a bone. After talking to the owner of the shelter however, I learned there was more to adopting little Chester, or any pet for that matter, than my love at first bark.

Emmie loves her pets. His fur is growing mangy and patchy. Grooming his fur. She was never happier playing with the pet. Her mother came and sat next to Emmie while she held Carnie in her lap and petted him. And when she did have time for Hamlet, Emmie cried and pleaded with her mom to take him to the vet.

Hospice Tails is a series of true stories about my experiences with pets and patients as a hospice social worker. The thin, spider-web scars on her knuckles spoke to intimate experience with hand-to-hand combat. I felt so sorry for the poor thing—we had to call our vet out to sedate him—so I decided to take him home as a foster.
