The last beaver in the area was killed ten miles to the east – near Pancevo around the year 1900, but, reintroduced some dozen years ago, there are some 150 of them in the country nowadays. Lucky and his instructor were successful in bluffing this particular bear, yet the very next year in the same area, Hoshino was killed by a Brown Bear.

I’m fairly certain that it was the deliberate strategy of the bird to kill the duck on the water and wait for it to come ashore. This bird was “tamer” than most of her species because she had become accustomed to hunting the narrow causeway for ducks and was relatively acclimated to all the vehicular traffic.
