The only place (outside England) where I have seen wild Fallow Deer in Europe is in Spain’s Coto Doñana, where they are numerous. I’ve had many sightings of Nutria (we call them Coypu) in Europe, where this South American animal is now widespread. A few are easy, such as the Egyptian Fruit Bat, the largest bat we have in Europe.

Over the years, though, I have enjoyed a number of memorable mammal sightings in Europe. Otters may be widespread in Europe, but they are usually elusive and difficult to see.

Horrible Hybrids

Where it had spent the summer is anyone’s guess, but the majority of the Pochard that winter in the UK come from Eastern Europe and Russia, with birds ringed in Latvia being particularly numerous. Was it the same individual? My guess is that it probably was. These two Racklehahns were quite different.

Though these gulls nest commonly in the British Isles, in the autumn great numbers move across to Britain from nesting grounds in Finland, Sweden and the Baltic states, so it seems most likely that 2BAT was a gull that had been bred in Lithuania, and that it returned to nest there every spring.
