Originally they were all placed in the family Capitonidae , but over time taxonomists have determined that actual relationships between these barbets are far more complex. The Banded Barbet is a medium-sized barbet that is endemic to Ethiopia and Eritrea. Gray-throated Barbet is one of the plainer members of the African Barbet family.

These 15 endemics and nearly 40 near-endemics (many of which were endemics until Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1991) are for the most part quite easily observed on the standard Ethiopian birding circuit. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.
