Whilst Guyana doesn’t boast the number of species of larger countries like Peru, Brazil and Colombia, one needs to consider the size difference between these countries. Peru, with a few less bird species than Colombia, is 6 times larger than Guyana. A Red Siskin close to one of the granite outcrops in the Rupununi.

And another list shows 6 endemics and 11 endangered species. 6. On one list, it is the 27th country with the most number of different bird species. On one list I’ve seen, there are 4 mainland endemics and 3 endemics on an island.

This critically endangered species was presumed extinct for over 100 years, and was not discovered again until pelagic trips (run by the same people as mine) began chumming to attract other seabirds. We ended up staying out a long time, because there was one conspicuous no-show, the New Zealand Storm-petrel.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism. It may be as simple as trying to hit the big white one.

” It was only an hour, and only one species of bird, but this was a big check off of my bucket list, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience that vividly reminded me why I love birding. I saw my best bird of the year during the World Birding Rally Challenge in South East Peru. Alfredo had to work for his Best Bird of the Year!
