Invading rats with bodies up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) long have begun eating eggs and chicks, and some experts fear that unless the rats are eradicated, they could tip the Humboldt penguin toward extinction.

All the inhabited continents except Africa have experienced bird extinctions; however the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List shows a startling, but not altogether unexpected, trend in that more and more of our bird species are facing extinction. The island is similar to Kapiti , cleared of introduced pests and used to hold endangered species. I found out about it while looking for information on the unfortunate penguin I discussed last week (which is still alive in Wellington Zoo), and so I stopped by on my way home to have a look.

Ulva Island is one of many New Zealand islands that the DOC has worked very hard to remove all the pests, and re-introduce many of the endangered species. Our next stops were at Portobello, for the Royal Albatross Center, and the Blue Penguin beach. Here are a couple of those Blue Penguins. A complete surprise.

The reason Alan had come was to film another endemic, a critically endangered species, the Orange-fronted Parakeet. One last surprise on Motuara island were some Blue Penguins ! From there we travelled around the island a bit and then another fellow birder Alan and I were dropped on the beach on Blumine.
