Controversial Elephant Death at San Diego Zoo

An animal rights group has called for a federal investigation into the death of an elephant at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Umoya, a 21-year-old African elephant, died Thursday, possibly due to injuries suffered during an attack by another elephant. The Safari Park has 18 elephants, including Umoya's two offspring.

Toronto Zoo's Remaining Elephants to Go to Sanctuary

Not only is Toronto closing its elephant exhibit, but the City Council voted to send the remaining elderly elephants to the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary instead of another zoo. This is excellent news.

I live in Seattle where Woodland Park Zoo is located. On the one hand, Woodland Park is very proud of its elephant conservation program and its elephant residents. On the other hand, Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants says they are not well-treated and should be in a sanctuary. I just don't know what to think.

I am reminded of the ducks’ perilous and arduous existence on each family outing to Heidelberg Zoo. This is especially true for my toddler son, who will rush there past the elephant enclosure and without giving the tigers as much as a casual glance. He doesn’t go there for the ducks, but for the fish.
