Little Terns breeding near Broome

On one occasion we were able to identify an individual Little Tern that had arrived in Broome from Taiwan at this time of year. We could see there was a marker we could use to go by the nest from a distance and establish if they were cooling eggs or chicks. The Little Terns had actually placed the two eggs near a small stick.

I agree with eBird that the Asian Glossy Starling is “fierce-looking” Appropriately, it is an invasive species in places such as Taiwan, where some papers recommend reducing the population.

They bred on a number of islands near Japan and Taiwan, and ranged widely and abundantly from the Aleutian Islands south through California. The most notorious effect is that their eggshells become so thin that a parent bird will crush it’s eggs while attempting to incubate them.

An additional benefit would be less nest predation by tidal mudflat crabs, the primary cause of Reed Parrotbill egg predation in tidal reed-bed habitat ( source ). Apparently, this is part of a broader trend – it has also been observed in Taiwan ( source ). This individual is apparently practicing some kind of weird yoga.

The bird “spent five months on Mindoro Island in the Philippines during the non-breeding season and migrated through Taiwan, the Chinese east coast, and the Korean peninsula” and on to the Russian Far East (indicating a certain lack of solidarity with Ukraine). This is the dark blue adult male (also shown on top of this post).

Fortunately for the buntings, they seem to detect most cuckoo eggs smuggled in (75% in one study). A study found that for Plain Prinia , egg characteristics in a mainland China location with many cuckoos make it much easier to spot cuckoo eggs than in a Taiwan location with few cuckoos ( source ).
