Jeff Gordon resigned as president of the American Birding Association, effective November 30, 2021. A week later, on December 7, 2021, the ABA got around to making an announcement on its website. As far as I can tell, this announcement was not posted on any of the ABA Facebook pages and the only mention in the ABA Twitter feed is a retweet of Jeff Gordon’s tweet from his personal account.

Yesterday morning was simply one of those incredibly eventful birding sessions, about which I may expound upon in parts within the coming weeks. After several (relatively) run-of-the-mill birding missions within the rainforest and along the coasts of Tobago over the last few weeks, we kept getting our socks knocked off while birding the wetlands of southwest Tobago yesterday.

Beljarica Backwaters (some August birding here ) is a spacious floodplain of the left bank of the Danube, less than 10 km / 6 mi north of Belgrade, and is an exciting place to bird.

In July 2011 a Henslow’s Sparrow was found in Ames, N.Y., a rural area in the eastern-central part of the state. Although Henslow’s had been reliably found in nearby Sharon Springs for many years, the last documented sighting was in 2008, and the sighting startled longtime birders, waking them up to the fact that breeding sites in the state were rapidly being lost.

Costa Rica is more than cloud forest with mega worthy quetzals, more than rainforest with fancy Keel-billed Toucans and luscious Green Honeycreepers. Those are certainly two of several birdy habitats in this bio-wonderland. Hedgerows are living fences and windbreaks, lines of green space that bisect fields and pastures. They can’t provide the same ecosystem value as natural forest and woodland but in places intensely modifed by people, hedges are vital sanctuaries for birds and other wildlife. In Costa Rica, we have those living fences, these planted rivulets of green.

Bird names say much about human perception, they can also give us insight into the people who invented names for official bird descriptions. Warblers might not always warble but whether by constant use of the word or because it really is a good English term for members of the Parulidae, “warbler” seems to fit. Sunbittern also works because what else could that bizarre and ancient bird be called?

In the more normal years, I would spend January visiting the very best wildfowling spots along the Danube and seeing the best birds there are, so in February I would be well saturated with birds and feeling: Still winter? Located in the Kutch District of Gujarat, the Naliya Grassland is the smallest reserve of India, covering only 2 square kilometers (yes – 0.77 sq mi), which contradict the conservation significance of the bird it was founded for, some three decades ago – the Critically Endangered Great Indian Bustard. In 2007 I was working in a university building that was just begging for bird feeders. It was a one-story square building, four sides enclosing a courtyard–two sides holding offices and classrooms, one side a brick-faced entrance hall, the fourth a glass-walled corridor that allowed views of the underused, full of green stuff courtyard. eBirders who enter checklists via the app automatically create an eBird Mobile Track that is attached to the checklist, though it is apparently only visible to the checklist submitter. The track appears in the upper left corner of the online checklist, and it has intrigued me since it started appearing. I recently birded the Tualatin River NWR near Portland, Oregon, and made that my test case for a deeper dive into the Mobile Track.

All birding is essentially good. Time spent watching any birds is time spent connecting with our natural surroundings, a time that can act as a relaxed escape as well as one of meditative focus. It’s all good and yet at the same time, there are still birding moments made special by seeing life birds, seeing and hearing birds do things we had never imagined, or losing oneself in the fantastic noise made by a flock of parakeets, geese, or migrating thrushes.

After a heavy pre-dawn rain, the morning was all misty and mysterious. I was greeted by omnipresent Grey-headed Chachalacas running with such a focused determination, resembling those small, green procompsognathus dinosaurs (“Compys”) in Jurassic Park and making me think that the CGI experts must have been sitting at this same veranda studying Chachalacas’ moves.

Despite what some outdated sources claim, the list of bird species reported for Costa Rica is much more than 860. Since the 1990s, thanks to higher numbers of observers, increased pelagic coverage, and some species expanding their ranges from the north and the south, the official bird list for Costa Rica has climbed to a robust 920 plus species. Southern Lapwing is a “new” addition that has become quite common.

I consider myself exceedingly fortunate to have several birder friends who are biologists. Most are ornithologists, although one is a botanist. One of those ornithologists is Jonathan Vargas, with whom I went birding on the first Monday of this month of May.

December is not the ideal month for bird counts, at least not in Costa Rica. Yes, we do have warm, tropical weather and a fancy assortment of resident and wintering species. Nor is there any trudging through snow in search of extra hardy species or visits to feeders with the hope of finding a grackle or Red-winged Blackbird that failed to fly south.

Yet, the organisers, Futuropa and ProImagen Costa Rica, kindly kept my ticket valid and this October I revisited Costa Rica. Not just to bird, but equally to rest, reset and restart.

Godwits and curlews are shorebird royalty. The macaws of the sandpiper clan, these long-billed, long-legged, loud calling birds are large and in charge. Unlike peeps and other smallish sandpipers, identification of godwits and curlews doesn’t even require the use of a scope. Better magnification is always preferred but there’s no need to investigate tiny toe palmations or miniscule feathered details on these magnificant mud probers.

We had a surprise early morning storm on Good Friday, so that brought some clouds for a change and a welcome 10mm of rain. We had thought we had possibly seen the last of the rain for about six or seven months, so any extra is a bonus.

Jianfengling National Forest Park is a park in the West of Hainan – the tourist websites claim that it is “the largest and best-preserved tropical original forest in China”, which – if true – is a rather sad statement given the wide inroads that commercial agriculture has made into the park. Still, it has quite a good habitat and birds – so good, in fact, that the frugal blog post writer (me) decided to write two separate posts about this park.
