Suda the elephant paints an elephant

4 The Love Of Animals

'Elephants are amazing, and Suda is a talented painter. I wish I could paint an elephant as well as she did! Maybe you need a trunk? The post Suda the elephant paints an elephant appeared first on 4 The Love of Animals.

Great Gray Owl: Seeing the Ghost

10,000 Birds

'There are birds more prized by North American birders than the Great Gray Owl , but not many*. This huge ghost of the far north — yellow-eyed, eerily silent, perfectly camouflaged to disappear into the coniferous forests they call home — is as potent an evocation of wilderness as a calling loon or a prowling wolf. Like many cold-weather creatures, the Great Gray Owl can to some extent trade altitude for latitude.

What we talk about when we talk about reputation

10,000 Birds

'In a recent article on birding in USA Today, I was quoted as saying the following : Nate Swick, editor of the ABA’s blog, says some people compare birding to golf, in that everyone keeps their own scores, relying on the honor system. What sets birding apart: No one cheats, “because that would be cheating yourself,” he says. Media is funny thing, and I was misconstrued a bit.

Swallows. Swallowed

10,000 Birds

'I’ve only seen Tigerfish (Alestidae, genus Hydrocynus , usually Hydrocynus goliath ) in two contexts, but I’ve seen a lot of them. One is on the plate, as dinner. The other is in the form of a fossil excavated from a paleontological site. You probably have to go to a resturant in Botswana or South Africa to find Tigerfish on the menu. To find them on certain ancient sites all you have to do is wet-screen enough sediment through fine mesh.

Luck favours the stubborn

10,000 Birds

'This weekend, S. and I were counting waterbirds along the Danube and stumbled upon that Great Black-backed Gull that I told you about before – the fourth one recorded in Serbia since mid-19th century and a very uncooperative bird that successfully avoided all photographic searches afterwards. Hastily, I mounted the scope onto a window clamp and then onto the half-open car window (it is faster than it sounds), took a furtive peek and – the bloody bird takes flight for no reason whatsoever!

Emus Can’t Stand the Heat, Get Into the Water

10,000 Birds

'First, Australia gave us surfing swans. Now, the latest aquatic antics come courtesy of Emus. Clare tipped us off to this nugget: a mob of Emu wading into the waters of the Monkey Mia preserve. (Photo above by Katie Hughes/Monkey Mia Wildsights through ABC Rural). These birds definitely have the right idea, as temperatures Down Under last week soared above 40 degrees Celsius (that’s over 100 degrees Farenheit, for the non-metric among us), postponing some Australian Open matches.

Pink-eared Ducks-a favourite duck

10,000 Birds

'The Pink-eared Duck Malacorhynchus membranaceus has to be my favourite duck! For obvious reasons it has listed under “other names” in field guides “Zebra Duck” and it is easily identified from all other duck species in Australia by its distinct stripes. The “pink ear” is a very small pink area just above the eye and is not as easily observed as the stripes, so no big surprise that it could be called a Zebra Duck.

A Broadbill for Christmas

10,000 Birds

'The broadbills are always a family* that birders visiting South East Asia want to see, and who could blame them? They usually take up one or two pretty plates in the guide books, next to the even more desired pittas, and rammed in between the non-passerines and the passerines. They are, with the pittas, the Old World’s only representatives of the otherwise American sub-oscine passerines (the New Zealand wrens being afforded their own distinct lineage).

Otters Must Be Stinky

10,000 Birds

'I’m currently in one of my favorite states: exhausted (maybe even a tiny bit tipsy) in a hotel room sorting through mountains of bird footage after a fun day birding with my friend Clay. I’m working on a project in Florida–if living in Minnesota has taught me anything, it’s that finding work in warmer areas in mid-winter will go a long way to keep your sanity during the deep freeze from November through April.

Where Are You Birding This Fourth Weekend of January 2014?

10,000 Birds

'The Bible assures us in Ecclesiastes that there is nothing new under the sun. I beg to differ and concur, as usual, with the more nuanced view of Ambrose Bierce, sultan of snark and author of The Devil’s Dictionary. In Bierce’s view, “There is nothing new under the sun but there are lots of old things we don’t know.” Who could disagree?

Birding Shinnecock Inlet in the Fog

10,000 Birds

'Though I have already shared what birding Shinnecock Inlet, that great, jetty-lined, waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean to Shinnecock Bay in eastern Long Island, in the snow is like, I thought that perhaps another post was in order. After all, birding in the snow isn’t going to happen very often but fog? That’s relatively common along the coast.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of January 2014)

10,000 Birds

'Though many Americans spent a significant chunk of their Sundays watching the National Football League’s conference championship games we here at 10,000 Birds assume that you probably spent at least some portion of your weekend out looking for birds other than the Seattle Seahawks , who will be representing the National Football Conference in the Super Bowl on 2 February.

Redgannet’s Year List 2014

10,000 Birds

'This year Redgannet has agreed to include birds on his year list only if they are logged from a site that he has either not birded before, or has not visited for more than 5 years. Whilst his nomadic lifestyle allows him to bird all around the world, he tends to favour certain spots and sticks to where he knows. If he is to become a better birder, he must try harder!

Jochen’s 2014 Year List

10,000 Birds

'Outlook and goals for 2014. Repetitions, repetitions, repetitons. In a funny twist of fate, it seems that 2014 will be much the same as 2012 and 2013 have been, with family trips to somewhere in France and business trips to Indonesia and Kazakhstan. I am certainly not complaining though, as a repetitive working routine that will lead to around 500 species a year is better than the working routine I had in the late 2000′s, where seeing more than 250 species a year would have been extraordi
