Notable Trees

10,000 Birds

Most birders of my acquaintance are also broader naturalists. They note butterflies, dragonflies, herps; they understand at least a bit about the ecosystems they frequent; they care about environmental issues, from conserving pockets of local green space to fighting climate change. In that context, what I’m about to say will probably not be that surprising or groundbreaking, but nevertheless: guys, trees are really really cool.

Birding the Equilux.

10,000 Birds

It is essential that, once learned, any new word should be used immediately in a showy manner to make one look smart. Thus, I give you the Equilux. We all know about the Equinox, the astronomical term to note the time when the Sun crosses the Equator in its seasonal meanderings. Fool that I am, I assumed that equal night would automatically mean equal day too.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of September 2017)

10,000 Birds

Some of us had long weekends and made them count. Some of us had short weekends or none at all and still made them count. No matter how much time you can spare, you MUST respond to the spectacle of migration taking place right now. Though it is still September and not really proper sparrow season yet, Corey still managed to turn up a nice Lincoln’s Sparrow at Kissena Corridor Park on Sunday morning, his first of the fall.

Shorebirds in Action: An introduction to waders and their behaviour, by Richard Chandler

10,000 Birds

Hi, my name is Dragan and I do not know my shorebirds. If I were to give a speech at the shorebirds conference, those would have been my opening words. Anything else would be a lie. Not that I haven’t had an opportunity to learn them. 18 years ago I moved to Botswana where that gloriously bright sunshine makes observing them easier, while shorebirds themselves ease things further by mostly sporting their wintering plumage.

A visit to Dog Lake

10,000 Birds

On the final leg of my “Old Home Week”, I travel out to Dog Lake, a pristine high mountain lake, surrounded by mature Ponderosa Pines. Located about 20 miles from Lakeview, Oregon, and sitting at an elevation of 5100 feet, this 208 acre lake is home to many species of fish, including Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. With shore side access limited to the northern end of the lake, that protection allows for a large population of water based birds.

Birding Before Hurricane Irma

10,000 Birds

I was lucky. Living so far west in the Panhandle, projections of Hurricane Irma’s path never crossed near Pensacola. Though we could breath a sigh of relief outside the famous “cone of uncertainty,” it has been heartbreaking to watch the devastation wrought in South Florida, the flooding up and down the eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast, and now Maria’s wrath in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

As September eases gracefully into October, one season morphs day by day into the next. By now, you’ve seen all the signs of what weather is to come. Hopefully, you’ve also been seeing the birds that attend these changes. if not, keep looking! I’m working all weekend but still hope to spot some of the shorebirds filtering through my area.

Night Shift Brewing: Whirlpool American Pale Ale

10,000 Birds

I was ready to say goodbye to summer for good with last week’s sour and boozy pumpkin ale review, but after four consecutive days of record high temperatures here Albany, New York this week, I’ve postponed reviews of brown ales, oatmeal stouts, barleywines, and other autumnal brews for at least one more week. As the mercury climbed into the 90s this week, I headed to my neighborhood bottle shop in search of some sudsy and refreshing relief from this unexpected heat wave.
