How Close Is “Too Close” To An Owl?

10,000 Birds

'I had an interesting email come in this winter: “I have been photographing birds for the past 8 years and have been confronted by numerous “Rude Birders.” My question that I hope you can help me with is what would be considered a safe distance to photograph Northern Saw-what Owls? My practice has normally been 6-10 feet from the subject since i have a 300mm lens.

Back to School with PetMD University

4 The Love Of Animals

'When I heard about PetMD University , I was excited to get back to school! Of course, it didn’t hurt that all the topics were about dogs and cats, and how we can help them live healthy, happy lives. It’s easy to get started, just create your free account, choose dog or cat, and then enroll in the courses you most want to know about. For my first course I enrolled in Exercising with your Dog.

Why Are Conservatives Pathological Jerks Who Hate The Environment?

10,000 Birds

'This is just ridiculous: With a fixed amount of money in their wallet, respondents had to “buy” either an old-school lightbulb or an efficient compact florescent bulb (CFL)…Both bulbs were labeled with basic hard data on their energy use, but without a translation of that into climate pros and cons. When the bulbs cost the same, and even when the CFL cost more, conservatives and liberals were equally likely to buy the efficient bulb.

Keeping Ducks and Geese as Pets

4 The Love Of Animals

'Ducks and geese may not be a particularly unusual sight in the wild, but have you ever thought about keeping them as pets? They can make excellent, if slightly quirky, pets. Ducks and geese make excellent pets because it is interesting to watch them as they go about their activities and engage with their environment. As well as ducks and geese bringing their character and personalities to your life, females also lay eggs that you can cook with.

The Oriolest Oriole

10,000 Birds

'Icterus is a wide-ranging neotropical genus consisting of the technicolor blackbirds we call orioles. The two dozen species are, nearly to an individual, long bodied and bicolored. Most make impressively woven, deep, nests, and eat insects and nectar, often coming to feeders well-stocked with oranges and jellies. In North America, at least in the eastern part of it, we celebrate the return of the Baltimore Oriole to parks and farms this time of year.

A Bird Rehabber Goes Birding. Sort Of.

10,000 Birds

'You see those white things at the edge of the marsh out there? They’re either Great White Egrets or White Storks. I don’t know which. This story will puzzle those who still assume my ability to fix a broken wing means I can always identify the bird from which it is drooping. Ten months ago my friend Boris and I arrived in Paris for an eight-day vacation.

Call for I and the Bird: Vultures

10,000 Birds

'Vultures are weird. They like dead things. They don’t have any feathers on their heads. Despite filling mostly the same niche, their representatives in the Old and New World aren’t really that closely related. Plus they’re found just about everywhere. So let’s shed a little light on these most misunderstood members of the bird world.

Duck Hunt 2013

10,000 Birds

'So as many of my loyal readers know, I have a very mixed relationship with vagrants and the chasing thereof. Nevertheless, when a Baikal Teal was reported by the illustrious Radd Icenoggle just outside Missoula, I couldn’t very well ignore the siren call. Especially once the bird made the front page of the Missoulian and my friends started asking me about it.

Black-tailed Native-hens

10,000 Birds

'We rarely see Black-tailed Native-hens Tribonyx ventralis around Broome, but we did see them in several locations in Southern Queensland earlier this year. We had not seen any near our home in Broome until three years ago and then after an absence of three years we have seen them pop up everywhere! They were even present at the Poo Ponds in town on New Year’s Day to get onto our year list very early.

Say’s Phoebe in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York

10,000 Birds

'A Say’s Phoebe was found this morning in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, while Desi and I were having a fun nature walk at Oakland Lake in Queens with our friend Kerry. After our nature walk we had lunch, and while eating lunch more reports of the phoebe, which is a species I had never seen before in New York State, were coming in over email. I like Say’s Phoebes , I like adding new birds to my New York State list, and Desi and I had nothing in particular that we had to do for the afternoo

Swimming with dolphins

10,000 Birds

'People ascribe near mythic status to the members of the family Delphinidae (and other related families). Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Which has always mystified me slightly. Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air. Sure, you might say that sharks eat people and dolphins don’t, but most sharks don’t eat people, and we can’t rule out the possibilit

A Day Active Little Brown Bat in Queens

10,000 Birds

'On Saturday’s nature walk at Oakland Lake, a small park in Queens, Desi and I got to enjoy the antics of a very active Little Brown Bat before our friend Kerry arrived to join us. It was nice to get the opportunity to watch and photograph a bat in bright sunlight, and this particular example of Myotis lucifugus was amazingly cooperative. It basically flew circles around a small clearing over our heads while both Desi and I stood transfixed.

'No time to talk… it’s May! Birds are on the wing in a big way. Keep your eyes to the skies and you may see more than you expect (like bats against a bright blue sky !). Corey and I will both be patrolling our respective corners of New York state in search of the newest avian arrivals. How about you? Where will you be this weekend and will you be birding?
