Yes, apples are a wonderful treat for your dog! Just be aware that apple cores and seeds should not be eaten by dogs. Apple seeds contain a compound similar to cyanide (it’s called amygdlin) which can prevent oxygen from being carried through the blood. Cores can be hard to digest as well, and could cause a blockage. Be aware that too many apples can cause loose stools.

Some of us around here ( some more than others) wear our love for Green Herons on our proverbial sleeves. But how could you not love these birds with their distinctive chestnut and pine plumage, their ribald nickname , their groovy necks ? But you shouldn’t just admire Butorides virescens for its beauty: this bird is smart! Researchers have documented Green Herons employing a variety of baits to lure prey within reach of that serpentine neck.

With regard to wild animals, the general policy recommended by the rights view is: let them be! Since this will require increased human intervention in human practices that threaten rare or endangered species (e.g., halting the destruction of natural habitat and closer surveillance of poaching, with much stiffer fines and longer prison sentences), the rights view sanctions this intervention, assuming that those humans involved are treated with the respect they are due.

To celebrate National Dog Day 2012, Best Friends Pet Care will be giving away free doggy ice cream treats to every dog who visits any Best Friends facility across the U.S. on Saturday, August 25. If your diet usually consists of dry seeds, imagine how luscious and shlurpy a long strand of algae must feel. These little Lonchura finches were sucking it up like spaghetti after plucking it from a small puddle in a Hong Kong wood recently. I had never noticed them do this before and until now, had assumed that they were exclusively granivorous. To find out if this was normal behaviour, I made a search on the internet.

A new puppy’s boundless energy will require some serious puppy chow as soon as they arrive at their new home. However, because a new puppy’s nutritional needs are very different from an adult dog’s, they may need some extra special care in their feeding. While every new puppy should be fed from their mother for at least the first four to six weeks, by eight weeks they should be ready to eat on their own.

In the common European Cuckoo, Cuculus canorus , females come in two morphs: Gray or rufus. It is thought that the gray morph mimics a bird eating hawk. In this way, the cuckolding Cuckoo can convince its cuckoldee, the Reed Warbler, to back off when the Cuckoo comes around, allowing the Cuckoo to toss out one of the Warbler’s eggs and replace

I just had to share, because it’s cute, and it’s totally Baby. She loves her treats from Cesar, they are called Cesar Softies Grilled Chicken Flavor. Other than carrots and broccoli, this little girl doesn’t get excited for treats, except the Softies. We really didn’t teach her to spin around like that, she just does it all on her own, and it’s pretty adorable.

I picked up a Red-tailed hawk two days ago. He was on the ground, and the finder thought he might have been hit by a car. He was not a fledgling, but not an adult. His eyes were in the process of changing from yellow to brown, and his tail was not yet red. Although his wing drooped, I couldn’t feel anything broken. He was thin, but not emaciated. He was strong enough to grab my glove with his foot and hang on.

There are no swifts in Missoula. Except when there are. When there are is migration, and it is happening now. As an East Coaster swifts were easy. There are Chimney Swifts , and they nest in chimneys. They are swift-shaped and move swiftly, and are different from all the other birds in both looks and call (although I guess you could mistake them for swallows if you were in a hurry, or drunk,) and that is that.

While you’re at it, you might also say hello to the Cebu Hawk-owl. Both new species were recently peeled off from the Philippine Hawk-owl , which may have a few more species to contribute before all is said and done. Those of us who adore owls can be grateful for more species to either love or chase futilely, depending on whether your owl luck is as bad as mine!

You may have noticed that we’ve had a rough week here at 10,000 Birds. Our webhost moved the site to a new server without alerting us to the steps we should take to make the transition smooth. If you’ve been drinking shade-grown coffee for ecological as well as epicurean reasons, pour yourself a congratulatory cup. A new University of Utah study finds that tropical agroforests, where crops are grown under trees rather than in clear-cut fields, are better overall for bird biodiversity than open farms. Keeping forests intact is obviously the best course of action, but when it comes to coffee and cocoa plantations, agroforests ensure that more birds have it made in the shade.

You may not have noticed, but this blog has been acting uncharacteristically lackadaisical this weekend. Many potential reasons spring to mind, but one possibility might be the same end-of-summer mania that seems to have infected me and everyone around me. Here in the United States, students and their families are no more than two weeks from the beginning of school, notwithstanding those poor kids who have already commenced their academic year.

To the Editor: “ Some in California Skirt a Ban on Foie Gras ” (news article, Aug. 13) might give readers the impression that California chefs are free to serve foie gras as a complimentary side dish and so evade the state ban on sales. Not so. When a diner pays money to a restaurant with the expectation that he or she will receive foie gras and then is served the dish, that constitutes a sale.

New Zealand has one of the direst records of extinction is modern times, second on really to Hawaii in terms of bird species lost. I’ve written at length in the past about the circumstances of that extinction event, how the rich endemic fauna was utterly vulnerable to introduced mammals and how waves of invaders wiped out different groups of species.

Over the past week I have continued to monitor the Pied Oystercatchers along our coast and as usual I observe the birds fight against predation of both their eggs and chicks. I thought you would like to know that there are some birds here on the Australian mainland that actually have protection. In October and November 2009 we spent time in Portland, Victoria with Grant’s work and it enabled us to see some new birds and animals along a very picturesque coast.
