Hybrid Teals

10,000 Birds

The more I learn about ducks, the more impressed I am with their blatant promiscuity. Mallards , of course, bring new meaning to the term dabbling duck , what with all those wild mallard hybrids and domestic cross-breeds running around. But apparently, all the Anas -species ducks are overly amorous or at least indiscriminate. Consider the teals. Teal is a broad term for a variety of dabbling ducks in the genus Anas.

Tufted Titmouse Plucking a Raccoon

10,000 Birds

There are many tales of a Tufted Titmouse taking hair from humans to use as nest-lining material. Watching a titmouse take hairs from a human is something I have always longed to see but I never considered how cool it might be to see a titmouse take hair from another creature. Fortunately, a pair of fellow Queens birders who will be known to those who read my posts about going to Ecuador, Karlo and Alison Mirth, witnessed a Tufted Titmouse taking hair from a Raccoon in Forest Park, Queens, rec

A Question of Migration

10,000 Birds

To a birder, migration means that you can live in Minnesota, New York, Paris or Moscow and see exotic tropical birds such as Piranga olivacea and Icterus galbula on a regular basis without buying a plane ticket. The birds do the flying for you. Even if you don’t live in the summer range of a particular species, you may have opportunities to observe it while it passes through, especailly if you live in an active flyway, like I happen to.

Playback of Bird Calls Benefits Some Birds

10,000 Birds

The use of digital devices to attract birds is getting more and more attention. It’s been brewing on birding listservs for years. I wrote about it for WildBird Magazine a few years ago and recently David Sibley tackled it in his blog. However, it’s now getting the attention of mainstream media via this article in The Seattle Times. I can’t help but wonder if this article will inspire people who never thought of using taped calls to give it go.

Jinx Warbler Vanquished

Note: This is an account, originally published in June 2006, of my quest to remove a jinx bird from my bird-watching soul. I am sharing it again here, at the request of Corey Finger, who takes some sort of sick pleasure in seeing other birders squirm and suffer under the weight of their obsession with life birds. Here is my story about a quest for the Connecticut Warbler.–Bill Thompson III.

Suing to Stop Bird Deaths

10,000 Birds

A groundbreaking lawsuit has been filed in Ontario , in which the owner of a trio of office buildings that are particularly dangerous to migrating birds (over 7,000 documented dead birds in the last decade) is being sued for failing to prevent the carnage. Here’s hoping that Ecojustice and Ontario Nature have success and that other building owners do the right thing and prevent bird deaths without being sued!

The email, received on May 7 at 6:15AM, reads verbatim: “RE: NEW YARD BIRD ‘This morning – flying with three of another related species (those were interesting enough in themselves).

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of May 2011?

10,000 Birds

Does anybody track how devastating spring migration must be to the global economy? Seriously, I know what kind of hit my personal productivity has taken this week once wood-warblers descended upon trees outside my home office window (awesome, right?) and can only imagine the economic impact extrapolated across birders all over the world. Sounds like the issue deserves further study, and by issue I mean the warblers outside my window!

Wake for the Wild

Wind farms are an emotive and divisive issue, especially amongst birders. A badly sited wind farm can lead to devastating consequences as we know only too well for many large birds, particularly raptors. In the UK the visual intrusion caused by the huge turbines is a hot topic with many believing they are ruining the beauty of our wild landscapes and natural heritage.

Mother’s Day weekend was deeded over to Daisy long ago. I had no say in what we were doing or where we were going. Not Wood-Warbler Week

10,000 Birds

As entertaining as it has been reading about the lovely spring migrations in North America recently, it might be worth remembering the fate of Southern Hemisphere types for whom the days are getting shorter and colder. A chilly southerly that felt like it could have blown straight the ice-sheets of Antarctica hit me today as I stood briefly outside, and winter, which had seemed to first arrive early and then relent somewhat, is here.

It really has been great to see such beautiful pictures of wood-warblers all week, especially when it has been so long since we saw any in the USA. It made us reach for our field guide for North America, but that really does not compare to the real thing. I had spent several holidays with my family in the USA in the 1980′s and then worked in Maine during the summer of 1985-beware the poison ivy and the snapping turtles!

The Poems of the Brown-headed Cowbird

10,000 Birds

Brown-headed Cowbirds evoke strong feelings in many birders, some of whom can’t abide a bird that lays its eggs in other birds’ nests, often to the detriment of the nest owners’ offspring. But there is much to like about cowbirds. Though the female is bland the male is quite snappy with his glossy black body and brown head. And while a thriving cowbird population pretty much demands the destruction of at least some individuals of other species one really can’t blame the

Best Bird of the Weekend (Wood-Warbler Week 2011)

10,000 Birds

Wood-Warbler Week has drawn to a close here on 10,000 Birds , yet all around the world the warbler watching remains hot and heavy. Luckily, I crossed paths with a Common Yellowthroat in full “witchity-witchity&# later in the weekend!
