Canada's Military Goes Back to Fur Hats

Critter News

I think this is just stubbornness. Excerpted from UPI. Canada's military is reverting to issuing real fur winter hats to soldiers, replacing synthetic tuques for winter use, the Department of Defense announced. An initial order for 1,000 of the new "Yukon" hats with muskrat fur has been placed at a cost of $65,000, the Globe and Mail reported. As late as the 1990s, female soldiers were issued winter hats made from mink and the ceremonial guard in Ottawa still wear the tall bearskin hats known as

Angel’s Miracle

4 The Love Of Animals

Hi! My name is Jan. On May 5, 2010, I adopted a two-year-old poodle/terrier mix from our local shelter, Animal Allies. I named her Angel. She came from another shelter as a stray, had been abused, was very skinny, and she was extremely shy and afraid of everyone. I fell in love with her immediately. Within weeks, with lots of love, patience, and socializing with other tenants and pets, she was a totally different dog.

On "Imposing" Our Beliefs on Our Children

Animal Person

It's fascinating, how what 98% of Americans do with their children is called "parenting" and "guidance." It can also be referred to as "transmission of culture," with its handing down of the trappings, rituals, holidays and even mutilations of religion and ethnicity. But what I do is "imposing" or "forcing" veganism and atheism on my child. It's not parenting; it's considered behavior that's irresponsible at best, and abusive at worst.

Dark Deeds

10,000 Birds

This spring I received a phone call from a friend of mine up here, whose growing interest in birds I’ve been nurturing. “I just saw some kind of duck fly by, it was being chased by Ravens ” was what he told me. It was unusual that there’d be any sort of duck around, given that there was still 3 or 4 feet of ice on the ocean, and all the lakes were still solid.

We were so excited when Chelsea wrote us about her business, Paint the Pet. You can get a custom pet portrait made from your favorite photo. Just look at all the adorable pets in her gallery ! Chelsea painted one of our sweet Maltese Baby, and as you can see, it turned out just adorable! We can’t wait to hang it up during the holiday season (and I think we will have to find a spot for it year round too because it’s just so cute).

Lucy the Elephant's Case to be Heard by Canadian Supreme Court?

Critter News

Could be. Excerpted from CTV News. The Supreme Court of Canada could be getting involved in the battle over the fate of an ailing elephant in an Edmonton zoo. Animal rights groups are seeking leave to appeal to the high court in their ongoing fight to have Lucy the elephant moved to a warm-weather U.S. wildlife sanctuary. PETA and Zoocheck have applied to challenge an Alberta Court of Appeal split decision last month that ruled against their plan to sue the City of Edmonton over Lucy.

Drunken Parrots Falling From the Skies

10,000 Birds

Keep an eye to the sky if you happen to be in Darwin, Australia, at the start of the wet season because that is when Red-collared Lorikeets are most likely to be getting drunk on fermenting fruit. “It’s definitely a seasonal thing because it’s linked to what they are at at the start of the wet season,” Cutter said. “There’s a low level (of drunken behaviour) all the year round but it reaches a peak from June to August.” Darwin locals say there has always been the phenomen

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of October 2011)

Sometimes a person should keep his fool mouth shut. Before the weekend began, I opined about how October felt like a real fall month as compared to the capricious climate swings of September. Then the freezing rain began! So much for my weekend… Unless you like House Sparrows more than I do, you won’t be impressed by my best bird of the weekend.

How To Select Bird Seed Mixes

10,000 Birds

Two common questions I get this time of year is 1. when do I start feeding birds and 2. what should I feed? First, unless you are talking hummingbirds and orioles just feed birds when you are in the mood to watch them and can afford it. There are always cool bird to be seen. Though some species are shedding breeding plumage and taking on more somber winter colors, they’re still often cute as button.

Pied Oystercatcher broken wing display

10,000 Birds

We are into the second attempt at breeding for this season in Broome for Pied Oystercatchers. The first eggs are laid during the first week of July each year and if these eggs fail to hatch or the chicks are lost they will lay further eggs within a few weeks. We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily! Sadly a lot of eggs are lost to feral cats and chicks are sometimes taken by birds of prey.

On 6 October I came across an American Redstart in Edgewater, New Jersey, that seemed perfectly normal at first, when I was only viewing the bird’s left side. It was foraging and even flycatching like any other redstart would. Pheasant Stocking an Unfortunate Waste of Money

Flooding related to Tropical Storm Lee severely damaged the two farms used for raising Ring-necked Pheasants in Pennsylvania earlier this year, limiting the number of birds that will be released for slaughter by hunters (and slaughter is exactly what shooting farm-raised birds is). Never fear, hunters ! In an effort to appease small game hunters, Roe said the commission will increase its production of pheasants to 200,000 birds for the 2012-13 season.

While in Ohio for the Midwest Birding Symposium Christopher , Susan , and I made our way to Metzger Marsh one day to see if there were any good birds out by the lake. Why would someone be famous now because of a big year thirteen years ago?

Our guide on this journey is not Dante but Henry Leon Dawson, a man who wrote extensively about birds at a time when writing was considered a form of verbal warfare and birding a brutal style of contact sport.
