Birds Are Migrating South. It Must Be Fall!

10,000 Birds

'I spent both mornings this weekend visiting local birding spots in Queens from the coast to the forested parks. I love birding in the fall because of the sheer number of birds that come through after breeding season and because with molting birds and juvenile birds things can sometimes get a bit challenging. And this weekend was a gorgeous weekend to be out looking for birds.

A Great Ornithologist’s Plea: Scale Back The Playback

10,000 Birds

'This Rufous-capped Warbler was seen and photographed without the aid of playback. It was a very pleasant experience. Florida Canyon, AZ. Not long ago, my dear colleague Seagull Steve (Global Birder Ranking System’s U.S. #7) had a blog post that got me thinking. Here are a couple excerpts. [The Rufous-capped Warbler] quickly skulked off, but I was happy.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of September 2014)

10,000 Birds

'Now that autumn has fallen, my part of the world feels like summer. Hopefully, October offers more of the same! My best birds this weekend were American Goldfinches on purple coneflowers, which is where I like them best. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a surprise Marsh Wren which popped up out of the reeds while Corey was busy counting Chimney Swifts feeding low over Willow Lake in Queens on Saturday morning.

Where to Watch Birds in the Iron Gates

10,000 Birds

'Beside birds, in this park you stand a chance of spotting the Eurasian Lynx , Brown Bear and Gray Wolf ! Well, do you really? I was about to say that I haven’t seen any of these in the wild (only tracks of Bear and Wolf in the snow, but not in this park) and then I remembered one Serbian ornithologist who often visited this area and once, while driving through the forest in the night, had the most elusive of the trio – the Lynx – framed in his headlights.

Northern Wheatear at Plum Beach, Brooklyn

10,000 Birds

'Not having to work until the afternoon on a Wednesday, I took advantage and decided to go birding yesterday. At seven in the morning I had just refound the Eurasian Wigeon at the north end of the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and turned around for the long slog down the east side of the pond when my phone buzzed with an email. At first I was going to ignore it but curiosity got the better of me.

For Europe’s Environmental Stewardship, a Man From Malta?

10,000 Birds

'Whether this ends up as a colossally bad decision remains to be seen. But for the time being, it looks like Maltese politician Karmenu Vella will probably be the European Union’s next environmental commissioner. Malta, you might recall, has the dubious distinction of being a hotspot for illegal hunting of protected birds. (Like the felled Turtle Dove photographed above by the BBC.).

Berry Springs Nature Reserve and Darwin River Dam

10,000 Birds

'Or I could rename this post… CROCODILES and SNAKES! Last Saturday we were able to visit Berry Springs Nature Reserve late in the afternoon, which is located to the south of Darwin and alongside the Territory Wildlife Park. The wildlife park is actually going to be 25 years old next month and will have free entry to celebrate. With limited time and preferring to bird alone in a natural environment we headed into the nature reserve and away from the springs.

What Exactly is a Pardalote?

10,000 Birds

'Sometimes, when I’m writing trip reports about far off places (relative to most of my readers) I wonder what exactly people make of some of the birds I mention seeing. It’s easy to talk about what a Storm’s Stork, a Red-fronted Parakeet or a Black Swan is without having to wonder if the reader knows what I’m talking about. But there are types of birds that many European or American readers will not only have never seen but also not have much idea what it is or how it rel

The Red-billed Leiothrix of Tuscany

10,000 Birds

'After my grim exposing you last month to Europe’s fifty shades of brown, I felt it incumbent upon me to right my wrong by introducing you to Europe’s most attractive bird, the Red-billed Leiothrix. Clearly, some scientists should never have been granted the privilege of assigning common names to bird species. You may gather from the bird’s name and the fact that its plumage is lacking any browns that the Red-billed Whatever is not really a European bird, “not really̶
