'I am half-awake, but keep my eyes closed. Listening to the wheeping of stays and shrouds and screeching of fenders against the next sailboat, I do not want to wake up. Still, we are sailing out of the marina soon and I should have some coffee before that. We are in the village of Finikas on the island of Syros in the Cyclades archipelago of Greece.

'This weekend I went to a blogging conference. As usual, it was filled with fun activities, one of which was a concert from Alex Boye. He is an amazing entertainer, engaging the audience the entire time, plus he is just plain talented! You might know him from his Let It Go cover that became a viral hit. I also love his cover of Royals: So, what does this have to do with blogging?

'On Thursday, 24 April, Eugene Nichols was minding his own business, birding along the shore of Lake Ontario on Point Peninsula, in the far northern reaches of New York State. He found an all white bird that didn’t belong and eventually deduced that he was looking at a Willow Ptarmigan. He contacted Jeff Bolsinger, a top birder from northern New York, and they went to the site and refound the bird the next day.

'We birders in the northeastern United States are unbearable in April. All we do is complain about the lack of migrating birds so far and in New York City if southeast winds are blowing we are nearly despondent because southeast winds mean that the birds are moving north but the easterly component of the winds keep usually keep the bulk of birds to our west.

'Like many birders in the online era, I’m a big fan of eBird. The program’s merits scarcely have to be repeated here, but needless to say my own birding has benefited from the record-keeping and good-natured competition that the program inspires. In the early days of eBird (you know, 3 or 4 years ago), I would carry a notepad in my pocket when I was birding, carefully noting the species and occasionally the numbers of birds I was seeing at a given location.

One of the interesting things I noticed in my Birds of Borneo guide was the seeming pattern of lowland endemics in the area of Sabah. 'Caribbean dry forests with trees such as Gumbo Limbo, Pigeon-Plum, and West Indies Mahogany; remote breeding colonies of Sooty Terns , Brown Noddies , and Masked Booby ; a cast of over twenty species of wintering warbler such as Black-throated Blue , Magnolia , and Worm-eating ; an assortment of West Indies specialties such as Black-whiskered Vireo , Antillean Nighthawk , and Mangrove Cuckoo — this could easily be a description of the birding on a Caribbean island.

'The first weekend of May is not a time to ask if one will be birding; that avian observation will ensue is a foregone conclusion. Birds are on the wing AT THIS VERY MOMENT. Even better, many of them, adorned in fresh breeding plumage, are at peak pulchritude. Obviously, you will be birding. But where? Corey and I are covering different parts of New York State.

'Before the weekend began, I mentioned how swallows hadn’t invaded these northern latitudes yet. I was mistaken. Swallows are indeed here, which means spring is as well! Spring happens to be peak raptor migration season in Western New York, so I spent some time at one of the nation’s premier hawkwatch platforms. Braddock Bay on a clear sunny day is a terrific place to enjoy the passage of hundreds of Broad-winged Hawks , which I was happy to do.

'It was the bobbing action on the rocks that drew my attention to the bird. This was a family vacation and I had led my unsuspecting wife and son out onto the curving pier at Aquatic Park, overlooking San Francisco Bay, ostensibly to get a better look at Alcatraz and the bridge, but actually with half a mind to finding a Wandering Tattler. I had seen one in the same location earlier in the year and was hoping to bump into it again before it headed north to it’s breeding grounds in the Arc

'The main highway south from Broome towards Port Hedland takes you through the middle of Roebuck Plains, which is a wide open flat area of bush that is private property. There are excellent birding opportunities along the highway throughout the year and the area still remains flooded from the rains over our Wet Season and it has been a breeding site for several species of birds.
