The Marvelous Spatuletail on Display!

10,000 Birds

'In preparing for my first trip to see the Marvelous Spatuletail ( Loddigesia mirabilis ), I decided to read as much as I possibly could. I had “The Birds of South America” by Rudolph Meyer de Schaunsee; which described the locality where this bird occurs, and had a brief description that highlighted the long tail feathers with terminal racquets. Back then, there were some odd paintings of this outlandishly ornamented hummingbird, but the graphic material at a time was nowhere near the stunning

Pet food ingredients and sourcing. It matters!

4 The Love Of Animals

'I have mentioned before that we have fed both of our dogs Hill’s pet food. I mention it again because it plays an important role in why you are seeing a lot of posts about Hill’s Ideal Balance on our site recently. You see, we have always felt great about Hill’s pet food, and were excited that they came out with a new, natural line.

‘Scuse Me While I Catch This Fly

10,000 Birds

'I miss Eastern Kingbirds. It’s not that they’re not around — I’ve seen them at the National Bison Range, to name but one definitively Montana location — but they’re not AROUND, like they always used to be back on the Olde Homestead. Instead we have other flycatchers, and I am not a fan of other flycatchers. Other flycatchers are not fans of me.

15 Years: Things Will Never Be The Same

10,000 Birds

'Hello my birding sons and daughters. Today we speak of the not-so-distant past, the present, and the history in between. A large portion of North American birders are relatively new to the game, with less than ten years under their belts. This post is meant to serve as a flashback to 1998, 15 years ago. It wasn’t a particularly eventful year in and of itself, but for those who weren’t around, a lot has changed since then.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of October 2013)

10,000 Birds

'When citizens of the United States tout the superiority of our country, we tend to focus on debatable issues of culture, economy, and government. However, if we’re being fair, one of the irrefutable elements that makes America great is our proliferation of Northern Cardinals. In fact, we lead the world in these ubiquitous red birds, a fact that undoubtedly chafes terrorists and freedom haters everywhere.

Palm Springs, Western Australia

10,000 Birds

'We visited Palm Springs, California towards the end of 1989 and we camped and looked for birds. This year we did the same, but this time it was Palm Springs, Western Australia! On our trip to Kununurra and Keep River National Park in August we took a detour when we reached Halls Creek. It is possible to drive the Duncan Highway all the way through to the Northern Territory and it is a good gravel road, but because there were some other places we wanted to visit on the main highway we did not ta

Leaves in Autumn: A Birder’s Bane

10,000 Birds

'How many times has the following happened to you? You are out birding on a crisp fall day. An interesting bird catches your eye but you are unable to get a defining look. You set yourself to get a good view, eyes in binoculars, intent on where the bird disappeared. Then the tiny portion of your eye somehow not completely in your binoculars detects movement.

Community conservation in action – Rotokare

10,000 Birds

'While I have previously praised the efforts of the Department of Conservation and other large conservation organisations, so today let me sing the praises of smaller groups, specifically the Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust. This community based organisation has been working in rural Taranaki, near where I went up the mountain. Run along the same lines as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, the site has had a large fence placed around it and the introduced mammals removed.

Call for I and the Bird: Show me your Sulids!

10,000 Birds

'I realize the potential for inappropriateness here is high. That the birds known by ornithologists as “Sulids” and by the general public, often accompanied by giggles and smirks, as Boobies, are silly is a charge no bird can deny. But the booby show has been intense in the last few months, with Blue-footed, Brown, and Masked Boobies showing up everywhere and anywhere.

Birding Humauaca and Abra Pampa – Northern Argentina Trip Report

10,000 Birds

'Continued from: Potrero de Yala – Yungas forest and birds. As we headed north of the Yala Biosphere the lush forest quickly disappeared and the dry valleys returned as we started climbing through the countryside toward Abra Pampa. On the way up we had chosen a couple of good birding areas to stop but as always our limited time did not allow for proper exploration.
