Do Birds Have Penises?

10,000 Birds

Warning, if you can’t tell by the title of the post, it’s going to get a little blue in this post. Most of us have heard the song, “Birds Do It, Bees Do It” but have you every really thought about how a bird fist tab A into slot B? Let’s look at the equipment. Most birds do not have a penis. Most birds have a little lump called a cloaca.

Nutrition for Dogs: Choosing the Right Food for Your Canine Companion

4 The Love Of Animals

Feed healthy food to your dog. Nutrition is among the most overlooked areas of responsible pet ownership. Many people simply buy what is on sale at their local grocery store, never realizing that there are huge differences in quality between pet food brands. But just like with people, the quality of your dog’s diet can dramatically affect their short and long-term health.

Fallout Continues Over Juan Carlos' Elephant Hunting Trip

Critter News

What an idiot. Read the full story on this NPR page. As Spaniards grapple with severe austerity measures and 24 percent unemployment, their king is dealing with a different kind of pain — extreme embarrassment over public outrage upon his return from an elephant hunt in Africa that cost nearly $60,000, or more than twice the average salary in Spain.

Do Birds Feel Love?

10,000 Birds

It’s clear that birds copulate, procreate, and promote their genes with alacrity. But love? Do birds feel love? Can they? To explore this question, it’s probably best to first define love. Love includes elements of need, but primarily those of affection. It’s an attachment to another being that inspires deep longing and desire to be together. It’s easy to observe this attachment behavior in parrots, especially pets.

Birds From Behind

10,000 Birds

I know it’s dangerous to title a post “Birds From Behind” during “Bird Love Week” but I have to admit… it’s kind of the point. I’m getting swept up and unduly influenced by duck anatomy and countless pictures of avian copulation. But in all seriousness, this post is actually about those moments that seem to get away… but don’t.

Purple Swamphen Love

10,000 Birds

Purple Swamphens are large gallinules and despite their name they are not actually “purple”, but it’s amazing what you can get away with when naming birds! They are a magnificent blue with a red frontal shield and stout bill. We have discovered that they are more likely to show their “love” for each other in areas where they have some onlookers and can even be quite devious.

The Dance of the Albatross

10,000 Birds

There are plenty of famous courtship performances in the bird world; those of the lyrebirds, the birds-of-paradise, the manakins. It would be hard to describe these performances as being about love, however. They are often too quick, too frenetic , and lead to a union so brief if you blink you’lll miss it. You won’t find love here anymore than you would in a hot and noisy nightclub.

Welcome to Bird Love Week!

10,000 Birds

I hope you love birds too. It is economical. It saves going to heaven. -Emily Dickinson This week of posts will either win great acclaim or great notoriety. Or perhaps both. Birds, like all adaptive organisms, are slaves to what is perhaps the most well known of the biological imperatives – reproduction. But, of course, birds do not spontaneously reproduce.

Bird Love Week: How They Get It Done

10,000 Birds

The subjects of love, sex and relationships have transfixed people for longer than we can possibly know. The many different ways people carry out their love lives are a celebration to some, and an abomination to others…and no matter if we approve or not, it makes for great gossip. Everyone has an opinion on monogamy, open relationships, extra-pair copulations (to borrow a scientific term) on the side, etc.

Whilst leading a birding tour to Sri Lanka, I spotted a flash of bright white in a lily-choked wetland near Ambalantota in the south-east of this verdant island. Dance Me to the End of Love

10,000 Birds

Today a friend asked me if ducks mate for life. Aside from creating an opportunity to deliver the whole “ducks are creepers” lecture, which is always entertaining in its effects on the listener, the question got me thinking about why people are so obsessed with animals mating for life. It’s one thing to decide that among humans, the most successful relationships are those that end in a mortality event, although even then it’s a little morbid.

Turkeys Gone Wild

Most encounters people have with turkeys either involve a dead, roasted bird on a dinner table or sliced turkey between two pieces of bread. Neither are very attractive. Of course, a live male Wild Turkey isn’t generally considered very attractive to people either, with the big hairy “beard” growing from their chest and caruncles and a snood growing from their featherless head.

The Hermit Thrush Catharus guttatus is an unassuming thrush to look at. Guttatus is Latin for “speckled” and the Hermit Thrush is certainly speckled on white below, with a brown back, a wagging rufous tail, pink legs and white eye ring. It is not the only Catharus thrush with spots and it is horribly disappointing that a bird with such an amazing singing voice would be given such an uninspiring scientific name.

The Great Bustard ( Otis tarda ) is one of the largest flying birds on the planet, topped only by the Kori Bustard ( Ardeotis kori ) and, possibly in some cases, by the Mute Swan ( Cygnus olor ). But what is even more spectacular than the sheer size of this bird, is its absolutely crazy lekking display. This last weekend I was in eastern Austria in the state of Burgenland – just a mile from the Hungarian border – where a small population of Great Bustards persists.

Most Well-endowed Birds

Birds in particular can become extremely preoccupied with superficialities.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of April 2012)

Yesterday marked the celebration of Earth Day, a holiday most of our readers observe every day. Here’s a question for all the proud naturalists and tree-huggers out there: Does Earth Day feel special to you or like more of the same? My Earth Day was cold and rainy, which didn’t bode well for the next migratory wave. As a consequence, I’ve been paying close attention to my feeder and more specifically the White-breasted Nuthatches that hang around the neighborhood.

Mating American Oystercatchers

American Oystercatchers , with their orange, carrot-like bills and piercing cries, are a familiar sight on the east coast of the United States. It is the rare beach-goer who fails to take notice of the birds if they are present and it is even more rare for someone to notice them and fail to think that they are one cool bird. Of course, I agree strongly and whenever oystercatchers are in my vicinity I can’t help trying to get decent pictures of them.

Nine Owls in Puluahua Crater

The Puluahaua crater is a unique collapsed caldera formed about 2500 years ago. It is unique in many ways including its bird life an it is part of our national reserves. I am not a big fan of Owls because they require nocturnal searching and it is very difficult to find them. In the three years that I have been birding in this crater I have seen five owls which are Rufous-banded Owl, Andean Pigmy Owl, Great-horned Owl, Barn Owl, and Burrowing Owl.

Here is my contribution to Bird Love Week from the tropics. The Maroon-tailed Parakeet lives in northern South America. In Ecuador it is found mostly in the tropical and sub-tropical forest of the east and west slopes. It is probably the most commonly seen parakeet encountered in the slopes but it is not always easily found. As with all the green parrots, once they stop in a tree their camouflage quickly allows them to blend with forest and disappear from view.

Like humans, dogs are susceptible to dehydration, overheating and sickness due to the sun and heat.
