Jewelry for animal lovers

4 The Love Of Animals

'If you are looking for a wonderful gift for the animal lover in your life, visit The Magic Zoo. Each piece is handmade by artist Merry Rosenfield, and the variety of animals to choose from is truly amazing! For the first time, I was able to find a Maltese represented in “puppy cut” which is how we keep our sweet pup. I am in love with my Maltese charm , it’s truly adorable (even better in person).

Definitively the Egyptians!

10,000 Birds

'Scientific papers are simply boring. That is why they have sections Abstract and Summary, to allow you to read the digested versions and skip the rest. Somehow, it seems, beginners writing their first papers ask their older colleagues for advice and hear something like: That writing of yours is way too amusing – that is not the way to build the career!

Why Aren’t Birds Using My Bird Bath?

10,000 Birds

'Common questions I get: “I put out a bird bath and no birds are using it. Why?” or. “I have a heated bird bath and I never see birds at it. Do they not like it?” This is a typical heated bird bath known as the API Heated Bath. When I worked at the bird store it was a popular model because it held a lot of water in the winter and could be mounted on a deck or pedestal and could be used year round.

No Other Way by Roger Real Drouin

10,000 Birds

'For some reason, this post did not go up in August when it was scheduled. My apologies to Mr. Drouin and the readers! As I noted last week , No Other Way is about the search for a ‘grail bird’ Not, in this case, THE grail bird — the Ivory-billed Woodpecker — but for the Northern Stilted Curlew, a stand-in for the Eskimo Curlew (don’t worry — other birds are given their proper names, it’s just the main player who is in the witness protection program.

Raptor Map Suggests Best Spots to Scan the Skies

10,000 Birds

'Calling all hawkeyes! North America is in the prime of raptor migration season, with millions of hawks, accipters, and buteos flying south for the winter. But for the average birder, these soaring raptors may not always be easy to see; lots of patches that are good for seeing other birds feature trees and other impediments to the wide-open skies that are necessary for the best raptor-watching experience.

US Government Shutdown Affects Birders (and Birds, Too)

10,000 Birds

'Kings Canyon National Park in California is just one of hundreds of shuttered U.S. parks and preserves. (Photo by the National Park Service). If you’re in the U.S. and you’ve got good weather forecast this weekend, you’re probably looking forward to some birding. After all, we’re in the peak of fall migration. (Disclosure: the White-throated Sparrows and Brown Creepers have started invading Chicago this week, and on my morning rounds I spotted a first-of-season Dark-eyed

A Lark Sparrow at Robert Moses State Park

10,000 Birds

'This past Friday I was out birding the coast of Long Island for most of the day with Seth Ausubel and Rich Kelly. We started at Jones Beach despite the reports of some good lingering birds at Robert Moses State Park, mostly because we wanted to find our own good birds. Sadly, despite nearly three hours of effort, we didn’t manage to pick up anything exceptional.

Rare Birds: The Extraordinary Tale of the Bermuda Petrel and the Man Who Brought It Back from Extinction–A Review

10,000 Birds

'The cahow is one wild and crazy bird. Born in a burrow, it first sees daylight when it is time to fledge, and then spends years at sea, flying, flying, flying with speed and acrobatic agility on thin wings that may take it thousands of miles from its birthplace, till it is time to come home to Bermuda to mate. There, it courts at night, the less moonlight and the wilder the winds, the better.

Tracks and Signs of the Animals and Birds of Britain and Europe by Lars-Henrik Olsen

10,000 Birds

'I am a birder, and I love birds. I don’t mind that they share the world with other creatures, and I have even developed an appreciation for mammals, reptiles and amphibians – but only so long as watching them doesn’t collide with my finding birds. I never cared much for insects and my interest in plants never got beyond the veggy section of my supermarked – in spite of buying field guides and giving both groups a good try.

NC BC Chickadees

10,000 Birds

'There are some birds I have not seen in North Carolina because they are very rare. There are some birds I have not seen in North Carolina because I have lousy luck. And there are some birds I have not seen in North Carolina because I am kind of a lazy lister. This is the story of the last one. For most of the continent, Black-capped Chickadee is not a particularly unusual bird.

Pied Oystercatchers breeding in Broome

10,000 Birds

'This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. The first eggs were laid in the first week of July, which is the case each year. The eggs take 28 days to hatch and it is then at least 35 days before the chicks are developed enough to fly and there have been problems with predation as in other years.

Black-footed Albatrosses Rock!

'One of the nice things about living in New Zealand and being the beat writer for that place is that I can pretty much make sure Corey feels jealous of my year list year in year out, regardless of how few birds I have seen and how many he has seen. It doesn’t really matter that he has seen a gaudy Orange Throated Brown Job or Streamered Spangled Spectaculette in whichever Caribbean island he has visited, or how many birds he finds in any particular county of New York (I always thought Amer

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of October 2013?

10,000 Birds

'As daylight dwindles in the Northern Hemisphere, birds proliferate and then progress out of the frame. October, as Dylan Thomas perceived it, was awash with avian activity: My birthday began with the water-. Birds and the birds of the winged trees flying my name. Above the farms and the white horses. And I rose. In rainy autumn. And walked abroad in a shower of all my days.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of September 2013)

10,000 Birds

'Believe it or not, September is just about spent. Who’s ready for October? Rumors of fall migration in Western New York must be greatly exaggerated. I worked hard trying to spot something special but earned little for my efforts until I hit a patch of birds clearly preparing to leave town. The best of the bunch was a Gray-cheeked Thrush (unless a Bicknell’s )!
