My ornithologist birding buddy Jonathan Vargas happened to be in town last week, with some time off from his excellent work as a birding guide and researcher. He wanted to go looking for the Slaty Vireo at my site of El Temascal, but I rained on his parade by pointing out that I had only seen this elusive species there three times in 35 visits to the site, and never in the past five years.

The bird species I consciously observed (and tried to catch, sorry) as a small boy was the Common Starling. One of the birds that triggered my listing (and made a birder out of a birdwatcher) was the Blue Waxbill, also called southern blue waxbill, blue-breasted waxbill, southern cordon-bleu, blue-cheeked cordon-bleu, blue-breasted cordon-bleu, Angola cordon-bleu, and Uraeginthus angolensis.

It’s mid June, and the summer birding doldrums have set in. The month with the longest days – it doesn’t get dark here until about 10pm – is never great for birding. Most of our summer breeders are busy rearing young, so the mornings are now relatively quiet, with not a lot of song. Our local Cuckoos are still singing, but they will be heading south before the end of the month.
