How to keep your cat warm this winter

4 The Love Of Animals

Cat owners! Have you woken up in the night with a wet nose burrowing under the covers? Has your pet been miaowing by the radiator, and grumpily finding cosy corners to sit in? There’s a good chance that they could be feeling the cold just as much as you. Yes, it’s a little neurotic to start buying a stash of electric blankets to swathe your kitty in, but there are a few easy (and cheap!

Birds, Hunters, and Lead

10,000 Birds

There are few sights more wrenching to a wildlife rehabilitator than a convulsing, lead-poisoned bird. Waterbirds eat lead shot while scouring the bottoms of ponds and lakes for food, songbirds ingest lead fragments along with grit and small stones to aid their digestion, and when raptors scavenge gutpiles and carcasses, they can end up with entire bullets, plus fragments, in their system.

The Feathery Tribe: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

I spent the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in the usual post-hurricane activities—looking for storm birds, making sure my loved ones were o.k., trying to grasp the enormity of what had just happened, and reading this book, The Feathery Tribe: Robert Ridgway and the Modern Study of Birds by Daniel Lewis. My daughter thought it was an odd choice—nonfiction, on the scholarly side.

Blue Jays Carrying Acorns

10,000 Birds

Though Blue Jays often manage to avoid letting me get a decent shot of them I managed to outsmart the clever corvids yesterday. I was at Kissena Corridor Park in Queens and noticed a steady stream of Blue Jays flying out of the park to a particular backyard and then flying back in to the park, generally following the same path. Slightly closer examination showed that they were going to fetch acorns!

But What Do Flamingos Mean?

10,000 Birds

Why can’t I shut up about this? In 1999, a woman named Jennifer Price published a fascinating — if since largely forgotten — book called Flight Maps. Flight Maps was a collection of essays about the interactions between culture and nature in the U.S., and the most memorable part of the book, the section that inspired the cover art, was the essay “A Brief Natural History of the Pink Flamingo.” This was not about the American Flamingo , or the Greater Flamingos I saw

Lark Sparrows Foraging at Lema Ranch

10,000 Birds

Lark Sparrow ( Chondestes grammacus ) photos by Larry Jordan Nearly two years ago I wrote my second post as the West Coast Beat Writer on Lema Ranch, a Northern California birding hot spot. I feel really lucky to have this McConnell Foundation headquarters available as a local birding spot because of the number of species that can bee seen there ( currently 125 ) and, because it is a popular local jogging spot, the birds are relatively jaded to people being in close proximity during daylight hou

The Petrels of French Frigate Shoals

I seem to having my own mini petrel-event here on the blog recently, I think it must be anticipation of seeing some in a few weeks. This time I’m not talking about the petrels of New Zealand, but those of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. I’ve already done a look at the terns of Tern Island, so this is about the many petrels you can find there.

Crimson and not crimson Crimson Finch

10,000 Birds

On our recent trip to Kununurra we encountered a rather odd looking bird. At Ivanhoe’s Crossing there were numerous Crimson Finch drinking and bathing on a regular basis, but on several occasions we saw a bird that had missed out on the “crimson” feature of the Crimson Finch. The markings were identical, but instead of red the bird was orange.

Put your guesses in the comments, using the common names of species. So if you think the first picture is of a Song Sparrow please type something like “I think the first picture is a Song Sparrow.” Don’t type something like “sparrow” because that will neither help us figure out what picture you w

On Post-Hurricane Birding in Queens

10,000 Birds

My plan for this morning was simple. I was going to drive out to the Rockaways, the barrier beaches in Queens, and find a spot to wait for the flocks of finches that were sure to be passing by on the northwest winds that had blown all night Friday night and were predicted to blow all day long. Daisy had heard of an organization called YANA (You Are Not Alone), that was distributing relief supplies to those who had suffered from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, and that needed warm clothes and

He wasn’t sure of the answer to my question so he referred me to the manager of the ranch. I immediately phoned the manager and enquired if the property had any Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls.

Birds of Pantanal

Although 99% is privately owned, the Pantanal (swamp in Spanish) was my favorite place in Brazil. I visited in September which is the dry season and we were never too far from water so this place must look like and ocean in the wet season, actually 80% of its land is under water in the rainy season from October through March. It is hard to pick one single item that stands out in Panatanal, let alone one single bird.

I’ve encountered plenty of White-winged Crossbills this week, but have my sights set on a Red one.
