Okay, okay, wood warblers are the bomb.

10,000 Birds

Last year 10,000 Birds celebrated Wood Warbler Week , which gave me an opportunity to describe exactly what a Wood Warbler (aka Phylloscopus sibilatrix ) really was. And to inform North Americans that their so-called wood warblers would be more aptly named Silly-Canaries. Despite fairly convincing arguments, it seems the entire North American ornithological community has completely ignored all logic and we have yet to see any major changes in naming logic.

Everyday Sunshine: Zoom Out

10,000 Birds

Riffing off my last post about places… here is a series of birds in their environments. If you’re ever caught out with a short lens or the birds are just too far away, you can still get good shots that tell the wider story. Above, a Burrowing Owl near the Salton Sea. A Western Meadowlark floats near San Francisco Bay. A Wilson’s Warbler in the reeds at a lake’s edge.

Back From Birding Hungary

10,000 Birds

I’m baaack! And what a trip to Hungary it was! Before I get into the nitty-gritties of my awesome birding experiences in Hungary I thought I would just share a few of the shots that I got during the trip. My life list has increased by 33 which, considering I tallied 137 species during the trip (out of the 160 that the group got), is a pretty significant total.

Evolution of the Multi-Media Bird

10,000 Birds

All of the sudden we have bird multi-media everywhere. On the last day of work for the regular school year, a fellow teacher gave my wife two presents; a little plastic device that takes plastic cards with chips inside them which in turn contain bird songs and vocalizations that go with drawings and other information about the bird, and a “ Bionic Ear ” that you can use to listen to your friends talk about you or when that gets boring, to listen to birds and stuff that are far away.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of June 2012)

10,000 Birds

Happy belated Father’s Day to everyone who observed it this weekend. Just to keep that sweet paternal vibe going, I’m going to award double points to anyone whose best bird of the weekend was seen in the company of a dad or by a dad with his child. Oh, you didn’t know we were keeping score? Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was the last bird he paid attention to in Hungary on Saturday morning before flying back to the United States, a European Goldfinch singing in a tree o

Land of a Thousand Wagtails

10,000 Birds

Continuing with my theme of common birds who were, in a sense, my companions throughout this trip, I would now like to turn my attention to the Motacilla — literally, “moving tails” — aka wagtails. Even if you’ve never seen one, you can probably guess one of the instantly-notable behavioral traits of this group. In fact, wagtails do not so much wag their tails as bob their butts, but bobbutts would be a really weird name for a family of birds.

Cliff Swallows and Pest Management

10,000 Birds

Some people consider Cliff Swallows ( Petrochelidon pyrrhonota ) pests! I know it sounds strange, especially when the folks at Mission San Juan Capistrano are trying to coax them back by playing recordings of the bird’s mating calls. Because I am a local Audubon board member, I was recently contacted by a bird lover who witnessed Cliff Swallow nests being destroyed at the marina where they dock their boat.

Why Go to the Birdfair?

The power of the pretend power line

10,000 Birds

On Sunday June 10th there were cyclonic winds across the whole of the southern part of Western Australia and due to the fact that all of the power is still above ground there were significant outages. Over 160,000 households were affected and days later there are still power lines down and power outages. Thankfully here in Broome we have mostly underground power, so when a cyclone hits there are very few poles that can fall over or get hit by trees.

There is no raptor quite so removed from the typical confines of what a bird of prey should look and behave like. Although they share some affinities with typical raptors (building eagle-like nests and possessing hooked bills) Secretarybirds have many characteristics that warrant them to be placed in their own genus, Sagittarius. They are the most terrestrial bird of prey in the world, regularly covering over 20 miles a day in their relentless search for food.

Five Things I Learned While Birding in Hungary

It is the insensible birder who doesn’t learn something on each and every birding outing.
