Wild Notes: Observations over time about birds and other fleeting things

10,000 Birds

Years ago, when I reviewed Brian Kimberling’s Snapper , I reflected a bit on the pros and cons of writing in the chatty, conversational style of the loquacious guy on the next bar stool. Given that it’s a style I myself often adopt (and sometimes fail at), it’s something I’ve thought a lot about. Pulled off properly it can be charming, funny, discursive and yet rewarding.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of July 2016)

10,000 Birds

Summer weekends might not offer as many birds as other times of year, but they certainly offer the best conditions for enjoying whatever might be found. Nothing beats cracking open a cold one on a hot day and watching waves of fledgling yard birds suck our feeders dry. Sara and I were thrilled to find that an Eastern Screech-Owl visited us late at night.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of August 2016?

10,000 Birds

Crazy at it seems, we’re already entering that part of the current season where we obsess over the next. In the United States, that means that kids (and teachers) are freaking out about the first day of school, even if that date is still nearly a month away. On the other hand, birders are getting psyched for fall migration. In either instance, I recommend mindfulness: enjoy what early August has to offer.

This Week in Bird News: Iceland’s Newest Residents, Sleeping-While-Flying Secrets, and a Truly Diabolical Image

10,000 Birds

It’s a sad day for nestcam watchers, as a Bald Eagle nonchalantly snatched one of Rachel and Steve’s Osprey fledglings. But thankfully, there’s other bird news that’s more positive. Listen up, listers: If you’ve got an Iceland list, you might need to amend it … the country has gained six new nesting species in the 21st century. Answers may be on the way for the devastating beak-deforming condition known as Avian Keratin Disorder— scientists think they’ve identified the virus behind the pro

Birding superstitions.

10,000 Birds

I am not generally given to superstition. I do not, for instance, indulge in the strange tradition of saluting Mr Magpie. There is however one peculiarity that I will freely admit to. I talk to commemorative benches. Is that a proper superstition, or merely an oddity? I am not sure, but I have raised many a passer-by’s eyebrow when they catch me in conversation with outdoor furniture.

Birding the Pannonian Sea Sands

10,000 Birds

Sandy terrains are at their best during spring migration and this is the off season for such habitats. July is that boring period after the breeding and prior to migration season. Yet, somehow, this month I did three trips to those sandy areas downriver from Belgrade. But first, where did all that sand came from? I know that you believe that Serbia is a land-locked country, but Belgrade city was actually built on an island in the sea.

The Terraces

10,000 Birds

There are some excellent “breakaway country” locations in the Goldfields area of Western Australia and one fine example is near Leonora. The gravel road is approximately 40 kilometres/25 miles north-east of the small township and is usually in reasonable condition. This particular area with its eroded cliffs is called “ The Terraces ” and is a beautiful place to explore and take in the environment.
