North American Songbirds: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

'Birding being a visual and an auditory pursuit, it’s not surprising that publishers have taken advantage of the media of its day to produce bird books accompanied by CDs or DVDs. These allow birders to hear as well as see the birds they are studying. (This concept has been totally transformed into the ‘birding app’, which allows birders to view and hear specific birds from their smart phones or other digital appliances wherever they may be.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of May 2014)

10,000 Birds

'What a weekend for those of us experiencing the exhilaration of spring migration! Assuming that your over-worked eyes are as blurry as mine at the moment, we should get right down to business and talk birds… The best of the many warblers I uncovered at Cobbs Hill this weekend was an entirely improbable Kentucky Warbler. I regret having no photo proof of a bird this unlikely, but rarely regret leaving that long lens at home; how many of you worked through your photography bug and back to

Mountain Swainson’s are the Best Swainson’s

10,000 Birds

'I saw my first Swainson’s Warbler in eastern North Carolina, along the Roanoke River near the town of Weldon. The story is etched into my memory not for my experience with the bird, which was an obstructed view of a singing male through a mess of dense underbrush at about 100 feet, but for the effort it took to get there. I walked though woods, waded into stagnant back channels of the Roanoke, tracked through an entire field of grass to make my offer to the bird gods in the form of stingi

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of May 2014?

10,000 Birds

'Last week might have been the official observance of International Migratory Bird Day along with innumerable Big Days, Big Sits, and Great Texas Birding Classics (well, maybe only one of those!), but spring is still springing and birds still winging towards their breeding or wintering grounds. No matter what events are scheduled where you live, you’ll have reason to celebrate if you get outside.

Fairy Bells

10,000 Birds

'As the wood warblers swarm north, it may seem odd to have a post that does not concern itself with birds at all. Instead it will celebrate one of the UK’s most spectacular natural events. Our own avian migration cannot compete with that of Northern America, but we can take comfort in the fact that we have Bluebells. Restricted to northern Europe, their real stronghold is in Britain where more than half of the world’s flowers can be seen during early May.

Pieces of the New Zealand Puzzle

10,000 Birds

'It’s been months since I was in Borneo but for any number of reasons I’m still writing about it. This isn’t cause I’m still there mentally, by the way. Mentally I’m already on my next trip, or next two trips actually. More on that later. But today, briefly, let’s recall that I am supposed to be the New Zealand beat writer.

Birders Know Best: Size Matters!

10,000 Birds

'[The Mute Swan , pictured above, is amongst the heaviest birds capable of flight and therefore a fine introduction to this post. Other than that, it''s got nothing to do with it.]. It was recently brought to my attention that identifying birds is easy when the birds look like we tell them to, but not so easy when the birds don’t: I was scanning a few ponds when a fly-by trio of ducks caused me excitement, concern, and to write this post.

Timing is Everything: Spring & Summer South Florida Targets

10,000 Birds

'Although many South Florida specialties can be seen throughout the year such as White-crowned Pigeon and Snail Kite , most visiting birders decide to come in the months of April and May in search of summer migrants or secretive birds that only vocalize during the breeding season. Over time, I have noticed that many birders arrive a bit too early to see some of these would-be targets.

Straw-necked Ibis move back to town

10,000 Birds

'There are three species of Ibis present in the Broome area and the range of these three species of Ibis is similar throughout Australia. The Glossy Ibis rarely comes right into town and prefers the ephemeral lakes and flooded plains and is the smallest of the three species. There are still good numbers of Glossy Ibis on the flooded land to the south of Broome.
