Lawns Should Go the Way of the Dodo

10,000 Birds

'I agree very strongly with Hamilton Nolan. This, especially, is a nice paragraph: Lawns are a false idol. They represent the ancient American ideal of taming nature to our own ends— an ideal formed in a time before we realized that we had already “tamed” nature so much that we were going to destroy ourselves. The desire for a bright green, evenly clipped, thoroughly artificial lawn comes from the same place as the desire for strict dress codes, all white neighborhoods, and dead hipp

Searching for the Elusive and Less-Colorful: The Sinaloa Martin

10,000 Birds

'Kathi Borgmann and Josh Beck are living the dream of many a North American birder. They packed up in June of 2013 and headed south from San Diego with the southern tip of South America as their destination. Like so many trips this one is more about the journey than the destination which brings us to why they have a guest post (hopefully the first of several) on 10,000 Birds.

Andean Condors On The News

10,000 Birds

'I just read on the news that about 20 Andean Condors (Vultur gryphus) were poisoned in Chile. The birds were observed crashing into the rocks high in the Andean mountains near a hydroelectric power plant. Other birds were seen crash landing. As Chilean officials and volunteers rescued 17 birds they noticed the birds were foaming from the beak. Another sick condor and two dead ones were found nearby.

Large-billed Terns at the Trincity Sewage Ponds

10,000 Birds

'A sewage pond is, like a landfill, one of those places by which non-birders get very confused. “Wait, you’re going to a sewage pond? Voluntarily? To see birds? What is wrong with you?” That small minded perspective is difficult to overcome despite Clare’s continued insistence on the excellence of Poo Ponds and my own small contribution from my visits to Florida’s Viera Wetlands and Nevada’s City of Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve.

American Rosefinches; Can You Tell Them Apart?

10,000 Birds

'After spotting the Cassin’s Finch ( Carpodacus cassinii ) pair above a couple of weeks ago at Lassen Volcanic National Park, I thought I had a new lifer! Now I’m not so sure. I may have seen these birds in my own yard and not even have known it! There are subtle differences between the Cassin’s Finch and its close relative, the Purple Finch ( Carpodacus purpureus ) and more obvious differences between these two species and the other American Rosefinch, the ubiquitous Hou

How does your city treat birds?

10,000 Birds

'Whichever city Lake Balboa is in, it gets my vote because it makes way for ducklings. That’s what Audubon California wants to know. (If the municipality is in California, that is.) Through next week, it’s running a contest to determine the state’s most bird-friendly burg , considering factors like adequate habitat, laws and regulations that benefit birds, and the general populace’s interest in all things avian.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of August 2013?

10,000 Birds

'Unseasonable weather can be a double-edged sword. After all, who doesn’t love an Indian Summer or a thrillingly warm day in the midst of winter? But, as some wise sage once said, live by the sword, die by the sword. The blade has come down on my part of the world with decidedly autumnal weather when we should be baking in the sun. Not only does this unpredictable and unwelcome coolth screw with summer plans, but it probably also messes with migrants’ heads.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of August 2013)

10,000 Birds

'Ah, these lazy days of summer will grow more frantic before long. Fit in at least one nap in a hammock before the leaves start falling! The birds I was most amused by this weekend were an inquisitive pair of Carolina Wrens ; everything else kept pretty well hidden. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a cooperative Lesser Yellowlegs on the famed East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

Remotest Endemic Birds

10,000 Birds

'If one was a serious twitcher – kinda like Phoebe Snetsinger (who saw approximately 8,400 species before her death), Tom Gullick (reputedly the first person to see over 9,000 birds) or me (17 species at last count that I’m sure of) – where would be the most remote place in the world that one would have to travel to see an endemic bird species?

Guiding at Cristalino Lodge Report I: Back to Birding School

Nemesis Bird: The Ongoing Saga

10,000 Birds

'I have been remiss. More than remiss — negligent. After making all of you, my friends and readers, help me pick a new nemesis bird way back last spring I let the actual finding of that said nemesis bird go by nearly unremarked. In my defense, I was caught up in the giddy rush of chasing down a first state record at the time, and also, it was not the noblest of sightings — two other guys at the Baikal Teal stakeout spotted the bird and said “oh, there’s a Red-naped Sapsuc

The Altruistic Pigeons

10,000 Birds

'I’ve just seen something that was a) exciting for the birder in me to watch and that b) completely stumped the zoologist in me: The ultimate altruistic birds. Looking out of my office window I spotted a flock of around 35 Domestic Pigeons high up in the sky in a dense formation dashing from one side to the other. Clearly the flock was being attacked by one of the local Peregrine Falcons , which is a common occurrence but it usually happens so high up in the air that I scarcely get to noti
