I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for owls. Wander through my front door and glance upwards and you’ll find at least two watching you, a Tawny Owl and a Barn Owl , both sadly gathered as roadkills. Above our fireplace is a large painting of a Barn Owl. The current header image of my own blog is another Barn Owl, this one a ringed individual I found daylight hunting, and unconcerned by the presence of my car as it hunted from posts presumably feeding young in early summer last year

STELLAR SHRIKES Shrikes (like this Grey-backed Fiscal ) are little wannabe raptors. They are quick and intense, with the requisite taste for lizards, snakes, and fledglings, but they’ve been evolutionarily deprived of the proper tools… so they improvise. Sure their bill is a slightly hooked which helps in nipping little chunks off their prey… but their talons need some help.

Colusa National Wildlife Refuge is part of the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex in California’s Central Valley. This complex consists of five national wildlife refuges (NWR) and three wildlife management areas (WMA) that comprise over 35,000 acres of wetlands and uplands. There are also two photography blinds on Sacramento NWR, one blind on Colusa NWR, and one blind on Delevan NWR.

Saturday was set aside for birding. Redgannet was in town and had all day to get out looking for birds so I had booked us for the pelagic trip out of Freeport and our plan was to find his life Snowy Owl and then get on the boat and enjoy a host of alcids, gulls, and gannets. Like all good plans this one did not come to pass as huge waves caused the cancellation of the pelagic trip.

Last Sunday we went for a short drive to the east of Broome to see if we could find some sunshine! The rain has been great for the land and everywhere is turning green. You do need to be careful of cattle wandering across the highway, as the grass always looks greener on the other side! You must also be careful to not go off the edge of the highway, as you risk getting bogged.

With superb American playoff football all weekend long, I hardly noticed the bitter arrival of authentic winter weather or the apparent absence of non-corvid avifauna in my immediate vicinity. The Sandhill Crane hunt in Kentucky is over for the season and only fifty birds were killed. While fifty dead birds is still fifty too many, it is better than the 400 that could have been killed under the rules of the hunting season. The Courier-Journal , Kentucky’s largest newspaper, excoriated the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources for allowing the hunt to happen in this editorial. a.

Excellent news! Animal advocacy groups have been lobbying for this for a while. Thank you Air Canada! The announcement below comes verbatim from the Pacific Free Press.they still need approval from the Canadian Transportation Agency though. Today, more than 40 animal advocacy organizations across Canada praised Air Canada for its recent decision to stop shipping non-human primates into the country for use in research laboratories.
