At last I was lucky to get some good shots of the legendary Long-wattled Umbrellabird at 23 de Junio. The early morning yielded some distant looks but just when we were walking back to the village we found a male and female pair that was hanging around closer to us near the school. The close encounter lasted for 15 minutes while the birds foraged and played in the trees showing their best sides.

This isn’t a story that is likely to touch the hearts of the pet lovers who frequent this site. In fact, quite the opposite—my personal story of owning two lovely rescue dogs for several years will make you uncomfortable. Still, it is a story worth telling, simply because there will be some of you who are in the position I was a few months ago, and even if you don’t agree with my final decision to give up on one of my dogs, my experience will hopefully open up a conversational space for multiple

Excerpted from CTV.CA. Animal rights groups are calling for a ban on the sale of horse meat after disturbing video at a slaughterhouse in west Quebec was sent to the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition. The footage was shot with a hidden camera inside Les Viandes de la Petite Nation near Montebello. It shows a parade of horses being stunned with what's called a captive bolt pistol.

He's 79 pounds of muscle, he sports a tuxedo, he's got gorgeous teeth (a first for the hounds in our house) and he's very shy. And afraid of men. On the upside, he's a mellow youngish guy (he turns four in March), he's healthy, he loves to jog a couple of miles every morning and he's great on the leash. And he's child friendly. Violet Rays is not a kid dog.

This week we decided to do a day trip about 40kms north of Broome in search of a Beach Stone-curlew , as they had been absent in Roebuck Bay for some reason this year. The road north starts off as bitumen/tar and then becomes sand/pindan and a four-wheel drive is recommended due to changing conditions. Here’s the location on Google Earth, which as you can see is a smaller creek system than Willie Creek further to the south.

The breeding grounds of the Blackthroat Luscinia obscura have been discovered in the Qinlang mountains of China’s Shaanxi Province. The seven singing males were almost equivalent to the total seen in the wild since the bird was discovered in the 1800s. Danny Gayheart of Noctor, Kentucky, pleaded guilty to selling three Red-tailed Hawks to an undercover agent for $50 each. He will have to pay over $1,600 to fund the birds’ rehabilitation and will be sentenced – to up to two years in prison – in February. a.

Sickos and poor shots, rejoice! The Pennsylvania House of Representatives, in all of its infinite wisdom, has shot down a bill to ban “pigeon shoots” which consist of live pigeons being released from cages directly in front of men with shotguns. As the only state in the nation that allows such a cruel and unsporting practice you would be forgiven for thinking that banning it would be a no-brainer.

Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with the killing of 24 geese and ducks in two parks in Concord, California (the original 10,000 Birds post about this can be found here ). It is unclear why the numbers have been changed from the 28 birds reported in the original article. The suspect is not being identified because of his age. Waterfowl numbers at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex may exceed two million by December, after the wetland areas of the Klamath Basin and other areas to the north become frozen.

I hope, when I reach their age, I'm as active and effective as Bob Barker and Betty White are in the animal rights movement. Excerpted from CBC News. Legendary game show host Bob Barker says it will cost $200,000 to move three elephants from the Toronto Zoo to a California sanctuary, and he doesn't mind paying for it himself. Toronto city council voted in October to move the elephants to a facility run by PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society) near Galt, Calif., called ARK 2000.

I am convinced that, like José Martí, the Ovenbird seeks to nourish the masses. But instead of feeding the Cuban masses hungry for freedom from Spain the Ovenbird in Bryant Park nourishes birders desperate for freedom from the tyranny of the season.

Our late autumn has been absurdly warm in the northeastern United States and though winter is only days away it seems no one has notified the weather. That is, no one had notified the weather until this past Sunday, the day of the Queens County Christmas Bird Count. While it wasn’t unreasonably cold it was the coldest day that we had experienced since February.

If you’re reading this, you’ve survived what may have been a very busy weekend of shopping, prepping, and partying. Hopefully you didn’t overextend yourself… the holiday season is just now beginning! I can’t recall a less birdy weekend than the one I just had. My only avian observation of note is how much easier the Red-tailed Hawks that stalk our suburban streets are to see now that the trees are bare.

It goes without saying that our three breeding species of mergansers in the United States are amongst the most brilliantly colored birds we have. Common , Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers all breed here, but Red-breasted is the more northerly of the group. Red-breasted Mergansers occupy most of Canada and into Alaska for breeding with some of the norther tier of the United States.
