Long-wattled Umbrellabird Photos

10,000 Birds

At last I was lucky to get some good shots of the legendary Long-wattled Umbrellabird at 23 de Junio. The early morning yielded some distant looks but just when we were walking back to the village we found a male and female pair that was hanging around closer to us near the school. The close encounter lasted for 15 minutes while the birds foraged and played in the trees showing their best sides.

A Tale of Two Dogs

4 The Love Of Animals

This isn’t a story that is likely to touch the hearts of the pet lovers who frequent this site. In fact, quite the opposite—my personal story of owning two lovely rescue dogs for several years will make you uncomfortable. Still, it is a story worth telling, simply because there will be some of you who are in the position I was a few months ago, and even if you don’t agree with my final decision to give up on one of my dogs, my experience will hopefully open up a conversational space for multiple

Critter News

Excerpted from CTV.CA. Animal rights groups are calling for a ban on the sale of horse meat after disturbing video at a slaughterhouse in west Quebec was sent to the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition. The footage was shot with a hidden camera inside Les Viandes de la Petite Nation near Montebello. It shows a parade of horses being stunned with what's called a captive bolt pistol.

On Stanley and Family Commitments

Animal Person

He's 79 pounds of muscle, he sports a tuxedo, he's got gorgeous teeth (a first for the hounds in our house) and he's very shy. And afraid of men. On the upside, he's a mellow youngish guy (he turns four in March), he's healthy, he loves to jog a couple of miles every morning and he's great on the leash. And he's child friendly. Violet Rays is not a kid dog.

Notable Mentions: Digiscoper of the Year 2011

10,000 Birds

A little while after the whole excitement of choosing and announcing the winners of the Digiscoper of the Year competition is over, I try to take a bit of a step back and have another look through the thousands of entries in the competition, and pick a few images that were not amongst the winning images, but that really stand out to me for one reason of the other.

Choosing a food that is right for you and your dog

4 The Love Of Animals

Since their initial domestication, dogs have been fed scraps from their owners until commercial pet food became readily available in the 1940’s. The convenience of ‘ready-made’ dog meals has been the key to its success, and since then many brands and varieties have been created, all coupled with great marketing strategies utilizing colorful labels and pictures.

Barred Creek

10,000 Birds

This week we decided to do a day trip about 40kms north of Broome in search of a Beach Stone-curlew , as they had been absent in Roebuck Bay for some reason this year. The road north starts off as bitumen/tar and then becomes sand/pindan and a four-wheel drive is recommended due to changing conditions. Here’s the location on Google Earth, which as you can see is a smaller creek system than Willie Creek further to the south.

Pennsylvania’s Sick Pastime Continues

10,000 Birds

Sickos and poor shots, rejoice! The Pennsylvania House of Representatives, in all of its infinite wisdom, has shot down a bill to ban “pigeon shoots” which consist of live pigeons being released from cages directly in front of men with shotguns. As the only state in the nation that allows such a cruel and unsporting practice you would be forgiven for thinking that banning it would be a no-brainer.

Bob Barker Offers to Pay to Move Canadian Elephants to Sanctuary

Critter News

I hope, when I reach their age, I'm as active and effective as Bob Barker and Betty White are in the animal rights movement. Excerpted from CBC News. Legendary game show host Bob Barker says it will cost $200,000 to move three elephants from the Toronto Zoo to a California sanctuary, and he doesn't mind paying for it himself. Toronto city council voted in October to move the elephants to a facility run by PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society) near Galt, Calif., called ARK 2000.

Cold Oven(bird)

We light the oven so that everyone might bake bread in it. -José Martí For the second time in three years there is an Ovenbird hanging around in Bryant Park well into December. I am convinced that, like José Martí, the Ovenbird seeks to nourish the masses. But instead of feeding the Cuban masses hungry for freedom from Spain the Ovenbird in Bryant Park nourishes birders desperate for freedom from the tyranny of the season.

Rufous Hummingbirds – The Accidental Tourists

Any hummingbird in December in stoney Manhattan is a remarkable sight — after all, hummingbirds are such tropical-looking birds… Wait. What does that even mean, tropical-looking? Why are these traits — small, quick, vivdly-colored and gleamingly metallic — associated with warm, lush climes? In part because of hummingbirds in the first place.
