When Feeding Birds Runs Amuck

10,000 Birds

Feeding birds is generally regarded as a harmless past-time, a wholesome way for people to share nature and enjoy wildlife with the family. However, more and more news stories are popping up this year of communities cracking down on bird feeding. Sometimes people find themselves the victims of ill-informed home owners associations that have a phobic view of wildlife.

Lawsuit to Challenge Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act

Critter News

Read the full article in the Washington Post. A group of animal rights activists sued the U.S. government Thursday to challenge the constitutionality of a rarely used law they say treats them like terrorists if they cause a loss in profits for businesses that use or sell animal products. Five activists represented by the Center for Constitutional Rights filed the lawsuit in federal court in Boston, asking that the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act be struck down as unconstitutional because it has

Bogota Sunangel or Not!

10,000 Birds

Bogota Sunangel or not, Rogitama Private Nature Reserve, about 3 hours drive north of Bogota, is a true success story. Founded by Roberto Chavarro and his family in the early eighties, this little reserve has been dropped slap-bang into the birding spotlight by the recent claims of the rediscovery of the Bogota Sunangel Heliangelus zusii , a species that is known from one record – a skin from 1909!

Patch: An Urban Red-tailed Hawk (4 of 4)

10,000 Birds

A nice thing about spending 7 months with the same bird, particularly a second year bird, is getting to watch it molt and acquire its adult plumage. Watching a bird mature is also gratifying because the majority of young birds don’t make it to their second birthday, so every adult you see is a special bird indeed. I remember noticing little red spots on Patch’s rump and closer inspection showed them to be the beginnings of her red tail.

Northern Shrike in Brooklyn

10,000 Birds

Any species of shrike is an outstanding bird in New York City. A Northern Shrike in Brooklyn is no exception. You can imagine my enjoyment then, when as we driving out of Floyd Bennett Field, Shawn Billerman, who was sitting in the passenger seat, suddenly exclaimed, “Shrike!” As my Ford Focus came to a screeching stop the gray, white, and black blur that had been speeding along next to the car perched up on a nearby bush and let us get good looks.

My home country of South Africa can only be described as a birding paradise! Although in raw numbers (843 species recorded to date) it doesn’t compete with tropical countries to the north or on other continents (especially South America), South Africa makes up for this in several ways: • the highest number of endemics on the continent: 19 true endemics, 2 breeding endemics, 1 winter endemic and 45 near-endemics (having more than 70% of their range within the borders of South Africa); • two near-

Time To Get Goosed!

Anyone thinking that it’s time to slow down needs to think again. The temperatures may not be conducive to shorts and T-shirt but there is still some great early winter birding to be had in Britain right now. The highlight of the early winter period for many over here has been an unusually large influx of Greater White-fronted Geese along the full span of the East Coast before penetrating further west and inland over the past 2-3 weeks.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of December 2011)

I didn’t go after any particular bird this weekend, which is good since I hardly saw any. The woods were quiet, so we focused on geocaching beneath the silent trees with only a single Hairy Woodpecker for company.

Why is the Robin’s breast red? Why are any of the parts of any birds colorful? To make it easier for birders to identify them, of course! But seriously, Science has a more interesting set of answers, and some recently published research on European Robins helps to examine this question in some detail. There are several reasons that scientists have postulated for any kind of signaling seen in animals, and bird’s colors are clearly some kind of signal.
