Vulture Follies

10,000 Birds

My rehabber friend Lisa Acton, who is with Animal Kingdom USA Wildlife Rehabilitation , picked up her phone and heard the voice of an elderly lady. “It’s a Raven ,” said the voice. “He’s hurt and he can’t fly. I’m afraid to go near him, because I think he’s going to attack me and peck my eyes out.” “Run, Tippi!” screamed Lisa. “Get away, before he and all his psycho bird friends tear the roof off your house!

Tom Regan on the Use of Animals in Science

Animal Ethics

All that the rights view prohibits is science that violates individual rights. If that means that there are some things we cannot learn, then so be it. There are also some things we cannot learn by using humans, if we respect their rights. The rights view merely requires moral consistency in this regard.

A Tale of Two Tropical Terns: Sooty and Bridled

10,000 Birds

Pelagic birding off the Atlantic coast of Florida can be a frustrating experience, usually involving long waits of up to an hour or more interspersed with brief flurries of activity — a far cry from pelagic birding off of coasts blessed with cold water currents and nutrient rich upwelling such as California, southeast Australia, and Peru. In the pelagic ‘deserts’ of Florida, as in deserts on land, specialist bird species manage to carve out an existence.

Review: Saving the Spoon-billed Sandpiper

10,000 Birds

Most readers here will be familiar with the plight of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper , a critically endangered wader that nests on the Russian tundra and winters in Southeast Asia. With populations plunging dramatically over the last decade, researchers from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Birds Russia, and a number of other conservation organizations made the always-controversial call to pluck eggs from the imperiled wild population and establish a captive breeding program as a final hedge against

Birding the Schlachtensee

10,000 Birds

Slaughter Lake does not sound like it would be a nice place to visit but we three Americans, my small family, were blissfully unaware of what Schlachtensee translates to before our expedition there. We were guided by Mike, my good friend since our days in junior high school together, and the four of us made our way to the Schlachtensee via the S1, one of the many trains that comprise Berlin’s train and subway system.

…so here’s a post about some birds at a spring. Okay, that’s a fairly weak way to start a post. I’m sorry. Second week in a new job and I come down with the flu. I really want to be in bed watching old episodes of Top Gear, but Corey will beat me if I miss any more posts, or at least make fun of how far I am behind everyone in the year list not a competition.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of September 2012)

10,000 Birds

The first weekend of September is a volatile time. A season of stasis gives way to months of movement and flux. What fun! My Best Bird of the Weekend was a Peregrine Falcon gracing an enjoyable Rochester barbecue; good food, good company, and good birds make a powerful combination. But my extended weekend may hold even better birds once I hit Montezuma NWR.

When two halves do not make a whole

10,000 Birds

The lives of birders are meted out in ticks and dips, and for every epic tale of the mega discovered and added to one of many lists, there are even more fascinating stories told of the birds that got away. We birders don’t always like to ruminate on missed birds, for some of us the wounds are worn too close to the surface. But I happen to think that those stories are better than the ones with happy endings.

The Fiery Red-fronted Serin

What may look like a cheesy title is a way of pointing out that the bird of this post is usually called Red-fronted Serin , yet BirdLife somehow refers to it as being Fire-fronted. I was stalking a small flock of White Wagtails at Tempelhof , a virtually impossible task when you are in a flat, grassy lawn area. Unfortunately, the sun was behind the buzzard and I despaired of getting a decent shot with the bad backlighting.

Roger Tory Peterson (1908-1996), legendary artist, naturalist, and Great Man of American birding, left a rich legacy. Peterson’s artistic legacy resides in the plates of those selfsame eponymous volumes.

There are two things you need to know about A Field Guide to the Wildlife of South Georgia , edited by Robert Burton and John Croxall, and produced by the South Georgia Heritage Trust. First, if you are, like me, geographically challenged, then you need to know that this is not about Georgia, the U.S. state. Nor is it about Georgia, the country in Eurasia.
