Pets Add Life; Baby’s Story

4 The Love Of Animals

I didn’t know it when I first saw those big, black, eyes staring back at me. I had no idea what this little dog would mean to our family, the only thing I did know was that she was meant to be ours, and she was going to make sure that happened. Well, it turns out her job was to bring my father’s smile back! If you doubt that pets add life, then you have never met our Maltese Baby.

Tom Regan on Kant's View of Animals

Animal Ethics

Unlike [John] Rawls, whose considered views on our duties regarding animals are unclear at best, [Immanuel] Kant provides us with an explicit statement of an indirect duty view. That Kant should hold such a view should not be surprising; it is a direct consequence of his moral theory, the main outlines of which may be briefly, albeit crudely, summarized.

Paws at BlogPaws

4 The Love Of Animals

We had a great time meeting all the furry attendees at BlogPaws this year. There were some seriously adorable pets in attendance, in addition to many great pet brands and wonderful speakers. Here are just a few of the adorable animals we met. The very handsome Sheldon of Palm Springs Savant fame. Manny-N-Marcuz of the Enlightened Ferret. They arrived in the Ferret Chariot, and were even more adorable in their tuxedos for the Nose to Nose awards.

Florida Scrub Jays at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

10,000 Birds

Back in January I finally completed the North American scrub jay trifecta – Western Scrub Jay , Island Scrub Jay , and Florida Scrub Jay. The latter bird was the one that I had been missing but a visit to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge during the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival fixed that. Of course, it was only in 1996 that the three scrub jays were split and there might yet be further splits, as Western Scrub Jay may someday become Woodhouse’s Scrub Jay , Califor

Superb Fairy-wrens

10,000 Birds

Following Duncan’s post about the Fabulous Fairy-wrens , you may be forgiven for wondering how many exceptional adjectives can be used in naming one genus of birds. The Malurus clan must be a contender as the most gushingly named group, including as it does, the Lovely Fairy-wren , the Splendid Fairy-wren and the Superb Fairy-wren. The other family notorious for its excitable nomenclature is the Birds of Paradise which include among their number the Bloomin’ Gorgeous Bird of Paradi

Big Year Birding Update

10,000 Birds

Seeing as it is near the midway point of the year I thought it would be nice to check in on how the blogging Big Year birders are doing thus far in 2012. It’s quite a list! Josh Vandermeulen is sitting pretty at 317 species for the year in Ontario, only 21 off the province’s record of 338, set by Glen Coady in 1996. Anthony Collerton is also racking up the species, with 322 species checked off his New York State checklist so far, only 30 species off the state record of 352 set just l

What Is An Ornithologist?

I recently changed jobs. I went from being a part-time National Park Ranger and freelancer to a full-time Avian Field Ecologist. This title basically means I get paid to watch birds (like the above Indigo Bunting I digiscoped with my iPhone and Swarovsksi Scope) before wind farms, solar panels and pipelines go under construction (or sometimes I get to id bird parts found post construction).

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of June 2012)

10,000 Birds

An interesting–or perhaps enervating–aspect of this time of year is how birding tends to run feast or famine. That is to say that, at least in the temperate regions, those of us who aren’t traveling somewhere special have to make do with the same old same old. Corey and I both pondered birds that are extremely ordinary for us. I enjoyed chattering Chimney Swifts while taking in tremendous bands at the Rochester International Jazz Festival.

A Twitch at Two, and the Flood

One of the really great things about living in the Arctic, and loving to watch and photograph birds, is that you can bird in the middle of the night if you so desire. I know you can bird in dark in New York and Newcastle, Weyburn and Walla Walla. But I’m not talking about owling, or listening for rails, or even pointing a microphone skyward to collect flight calls of migrants.

The Loveliest Lizards

The death of Lonesome George has robbed the world of not only a (sub)species (albeit one that has been functionally extinct for a long time since) but of one of the few celebrity reptiles. The short-sighted monkey creatures in charge of our planet have long equated “cold-blooded” with “evil”, and while amphibians have generally been rehabilitated into the cute/charming category — except in Australia — reptiles still get short shrift in the world of ecological

Swampcrawler

One of the more exciting birds this summer in this little corner of North Carolina is undoubtedly the King Rail s that have been regularly reported in a still-water back-arm of Jordan Lake in Chatham County, just south of where I live. The species shows up from time to time in the Piedmont, usually taking up in some random swampy ditch or wet meadow one year and not returning for several after, but this singular spot has been on the radar of many would-be rail watchers for a while, and those in

Another Reason to Keep Your Cats Indoors – Bears!

Some cats, like my Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Paul’s pet, Pippa, are not bright enough to realize that, you know, that’s a freaking bear! Then again, there are several videos out there (like the one below) that show cats fearlessly confronting bears and suffering no ill effects, so maybe people should only let cats out when there is a bear to chase off?

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of June 2012?

Broome’s famous Cable Beach, named after the telegraph undersea cable that was laid in 1889 to enable communication with England via Singapore, stretches about 23 kilometres-14 miles. To access the northern side of the creek you have to drive inland some distance and depending on the tide take one of two tracks across the salt flats to reach the cr

As one flies into Sydney’s airport it is clearly visible as a very definite boundary marking the edge of the city, but having seen it many times from the air it was one of those places that I just never managed to get to.
