Animal Ethics

To the editor: The gorilla Harambe’s killing at the Cincinnati Zoo surely calls our society to ask if it is moral or just to keep animals in a prison to be used, at worst, as objects of entertainment or, at best, under the guise of “education.” (“ Harambe the gorilla dies, meat-eaters grieve ,” Opinion, June 5) Is there no accountability on the part of the parents of the child who found himself in the gorilla exhibit?

Can My Rat Eat That?

4 The Love Of Animals

If you’re keeping rats you often need to find out quickly whether you can give them a snack, maybe something from your own meal, or you want to know whether it’s worth buying in something you think they might enjoy. … Continue reading → The post Can My Rat Eat That? appeared first on 4 The Love of Animals.

Flying Lemons Everywhere

10,000 Birds

It has been a while since I birded a new area for the first time – I sure missed the feeling. And now I am about to explore a dam, not far from the village where my mother was born. I used the family summer cottage as a base camp, placed in an old orchard where no branches are ever cut off, even when old or rotten – only supported from below. As a result, I had 15 species in the first hour.

Greater Sage-grouse v. Wind Turbines in Oregon

10,000 Birds

Jason A. Crotty is a birder and lawyer living in Portland, Oregon who has been sharing some thought-provoking pieces with 10,000 Birds readers. Jason’s first contribution tackled the importance of the National Wildlife Refuge System., while his second took a deep look at how many birders there really are. Wind energy is an alternative to burning fossil fuels to generate electricity, but there are consequences to the environment and, in particular, to birds.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of June 2016?

10,000 Birds

The world’s temperate zones enter this weekend in a state of equipoise, balanced precariously between a season of migration and one of relative stasis. But a keen eye observes change every week, with new birds coming and going all the time. In June, we wish some birds farewell for now, knowing that others are right behind them. I’m eager to see whether I can add any more warblers to my year list this weekend, so look for me in the general vicinity of Rochester.

Review: Levenhuk Karma PRO 10×42 Binocular

10,000 Birds

Click the image above for what I call “Still Life With Dylan” When it comes to binoculars, I’ve long been devoted to my trusty Monarch 8x42s. They feel great, they function beautifully, and they’ve seen me through most of my best birding days. (Plus they managed to survive a momentary lapse of reason on the beach at Indiana Dunes relatively unscathed.).

Antipodean Albatrosses

10,000 Birds

I’m taking a three month break from writing to recharge (I can’t promise this will improve what I produce when I get back) so obviously I had to send myself off in a way that would annoy Corey. So here’s some Antipodean Albatrosses! I’ve always planned to do a post on this species and always been scared that I’ll probably get some of the pictures wrong.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of June 2016)

10,000 Birds

May may take honors for the month most of us think of when migration is mentioned, but that doesn’t mean that other months don’t have their charms. June in the Northern Hemisphere brings birds on their breeding grounds, some still frisky and others settled down taking care of their chicks. From a birding perspective, this month offers an abundance of excitement.

To the Gulf Stream Once Again

10,000 Birds

The other day, Redgannet, when sharing the 10,000 Birds combined bird list for 2016 , mentioned that I had made some sort of notable contribution by submitting 25 checklists in one day. That sounds exciting, like there’s some sort of story there. But the truth is perhaps more pedestrian. This is the standard eBird pelagic protocol, which encourages birders to submit a new checklist every 30 minutes or so.

Red-winged Parrots

10,000 Birds

One of the most common parrots around Broome is the Red-winged Parrot and they can often be seen flying around, but I have rarely been able to get any decent photos of them. The problem with Red-winged Parrots is that they are mostly green and they blend in so well that they often don’t stand out and they are usually very cautious too. However, I was able to get some close-up photos not too long ago and it was of a magnificent specimen with really coloured red wings.

Animal Rights

Animal Ethics

Good leftist that he is, Peter Singer doesn't let a crisis go to waste. Addendum: The argument seems to be as follows: It is inconsistent both (a) to eat meat and (b) to condemn (or mourn) the killing of Harambe; I condemn (or mourn) the killing of Harambe; therefore, I may no longer eat meat. Here are some objections: The first premise is false. The first premise is true, but I don't care about inconsistency.

Mexican Hummingbirds

10,000 Birds

Ahh, for the love of Hummingbirds! I mean, who doesn’t love these energetic little beauties? I grew up in the great Pacific Northwest, and hummingbirds sightings were few and far between. We saw an Anna’s every now and then, and even rarer yet was the Rufous Hummingbird. So, I was very excited to be spending some time in Mexico. Having pretty much memorized my Sibley Guide, I knew that there was going to be a whole new group of hummingbirds to add to my Life List.

Keeping Track of My Birds… for an Entire Year

10,000 Birds

In November of 2015, I saw a Northern Mockingbird 20 out of the 30 days. A Brown-headed Nuthatch ? 3 of the 30 days. European Starling ? 8 days. If you’re a rational person, you’re asking yourself two questions: How does she know that? Why does she care? Because I like symmetry, I’ll give you two answers: I’m a little bit crazy.

Combined Beats’ List, May 2016

10,000 Birds

This is an update for the combined yearlist compiled by the beat writers at 10,000Birds. The list is becoming big and cumbersome and difficult to fit onto one page. So this month, we have just noted the new sightings while we find a way to update the original without blacking out a city block. Sightings through May 31 st bring the total for the beats’ combined list to 1744.
