Sleeping With The Beast

4 The Love Of Animals

Sleeping With The Beast is an intimate look at the canine-human relationship. Full of colorful, and memorable photographs, along with text that explores what it is really like to live, work, and play with our furry companions. And of course, “beast” is used in a loving and playful way here. It’s obvious that the author, Dale Ryan, is a dog lover, after all, she does have five dogs.

Tufted Titmice at the Central Park Bird Feeders

10,000 Birds

The feeders in the Ramble in Central Park are fully stocked and going strong again this winter. In addition to the expected species, both Pine Siskins and a Common Redpoll have been reported. But on a visit to the park on Saturday morning I was most surprised by the sheer number of Tufted Titmice. Tufted Titmouse (click it to make it big) I don’t ever remember seeing so many Tufted Titmice in the park and the number around the feeders was really impressive.

Animal Ethics

I began this blog nine years ago today. ( Here is the first post.) In that time, there have been 245,434 visits, which is an average of 27,270.4 visits per year and 74.6 visits per day. My posting has slowed considerably, but I hope the archive is of use to students (no plagiarism, please!) and anyone else who is interested in the moral status of nonhuman animals.

Carolina Wren at Van Saun Park

10,000 Birds

I really do like the short birding outings I experience at Van Saun Park in Paramus, New Jersey, once or twice a week before I head in to the office. I’ve gotten to know where to expect to find the common birds and sometimes I spot something new for me in the park, like a Vesper Sparrow or an Eastern Bluebird. One of the species that I regularly hear but only sometimes see is the Carolina Wren.

Barred Owl in Central Park

10,000 Birds

Barred Owl is not a species that most birders expect to find in New York City, much less Central Park. When reports of not one, not two, but three (!) Barred Owls in Central Park surfaced last week I was more than a little surprised and decided that when I had the opportunity I would make my way to Manhattan and try to see a Barred Owl myself. Saturday morning was my first opportunity and I made my way via the F and the D trains to Columbus Circle, at the southwest corner of Central Park, and wa

Twitching Northern Lapwings in Montauk

10,000 Birds

Driving to the eastern extremity of New York State with the hope of seeing a bird, rare for North America, is an odd and entertaining way to spend the predawn hours. When not enough coffee has reached your cerebral cortex so you are in a bit of a fog and there is also a literal fog because of warm weather and cold land in the wake of a nor’easter it becomes a bit more entertaining, at least at the time.

Primarily, Lapwings are an Old World family with over 20 species including Australasia’s Masked Lapwing , Asia’s Yellow-wattled Lapwing and the Red-wattled Lapwing of the Middle East. Masked Lapwing Africa is the spiritual home of the Vanellus family, boasting as many as 14 species including the abundant Crowned Lapwing. Crowned Lapwing For such a huge area of land with great expanses of pasture, prairie and field, I find it odd that the Americas only host 2 species of Lapwing.

Seeing Sociable Lapwing in Kazakhstan

10,000 Birds

Kazakhstan – May 2009 After our excellent time at the Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve we bid a fond farewell to its gorgeous grassy terrain and made our way to a location where Sociable Lapwing were known to breed. Now, seeing Sociable Lapwing , a species that is critically endangered and thought to number roughly 11,000 individuals, would be a treat any day but to see several pairs on their breeding grounds?

26 Hours in Dubai

10,000 Birds

Following on from my recent description of a brief visit to Kuala Lumpur , my return trip from Britain gave me 26hours in Dubai. It was actually a moment’s impulse. The travel agent mentioned I had a 2 hour layover in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. I was flying Emirates and that was the hub. I knew nothing about the place beyond some distant recollection of an islands shaped like a palm tree and lots of shiny tall buildings in a desert.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of November 2012)

10,000 Birds

We in the United States just enjoyed (or endured) the most commercial weekend of the calendar year. The extravagant culinary commitment of Thanksgiving Thursday seems modest next to the profligate spirit of Black Friday. The excitement hardly ends there with Small Business Saturday and today’s observance of Cyber Monday. Lucky are those who can find a moment’s respite in nature.

Washing Whimbrels

10,000 Birds

The Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus is one of the noisiest shorebirds around Broome and should you happen to not notice it amongst any rocky outcrops it will soon advise you of its presence. They are a large shorebird with a down-curved bill and are like a larger version of the Little Curlew. At high tide they will congregate together in a small flock and often they will roost amongst the other shorebirds.

Redpolls Run Rampant

10,000 Birds

It’s been beautiful here in Montana lately. By beautiful, I mean too cold, too gray, and as always too dry, but full of birds. The list serv is burning up with news of a vagrant (we hope, and dutifully analyzed for traces of cage wear) Harris Hawk , movements of White-winged Crossbills and Pine Grosbeaks , Northern Pygmy Owls popping out of the shrubbery, and other winter goodies.

A Painted Bunting in Queens!

On Sunday afternoon while we were celebrating Desi’s third birthday word reached me that a Painted Bunting had been found by Eric Miller in Alley Pond Park. For those who missed the post about the Virginia’s Warbler and don’t know this already, Alley Pond Park is in Queens. Also for those who don’t know this already I am a bit obsessed about my Queens list.

Holiday pet items at Target

4 The Love Of Animals

Have you seen the fun things for pets at Target this year? We got a sneak peak with these images below, but we had to see the Christmas pajamas in person! Guess what happened? We got a pair for Baby. They have cute toys for dogs and cats, and all sorts of fun clothes too. And yes, the pajamas are simply adorable. Baby loves them, and they are lightweight enough that she can wear them in the house without getting too warm.

Birding while Holiday Shopping

10,000 Birds

Although the two activities seem mutually exclusive at first glance, shopping mall parking lots and the edge habitats that surround them can be ideal for incidental birding in the holiday season or even any season. Seeing as birds are extremely adaptable creatures as a whole, I have always found it interesting to see which bird species manage to make a living or even thrive among all the concrete, cars, and noise.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of December 2012?

10,000 Birds

We’re entering the home stretch of the calendar year with just one more month to go before 2013. December tends to be a hectic month with lots of end-of-year business activity interrupting our holiday preparation and celebration. My advice for a peaceful December is to avoid malls on the weekends… go birding instead! Despite my advice, I don’t expect to get out in nature this weekend due to a deluge of work to do before my big trip next week (which I don’t believe I’
