While breast cancer awareness month for people might be over, it’s important to realize that we humans aren’t the only ones affected by the disease. In fact, I experienced it first hand when my pet rat developed breast cancer late in her life. Here are some great facts about breast cancer in dogs and cats. Two victories. Proposition 8 passed in Missouri. It stops puppy mill abuses by establishing responsible standards for the proper care of dogs. Also, Proposition 109 failed in Arizona. When I agreed to read and review Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's THE DOG WHO COULDN'T STOP LOVING (Harper 2010), the regal Charles Hobson Booger, III was still with us. When it arrived, the day after Charles died, I'll admit to wanting to burn it. Essentially, I was afraid that the pain would never stop. And the crying would never stop. But it has lessened some, and I've gained back that five pounds I lost, so I suppose my heart is on the mend.

To the Editor: Re “ New Way to Help Chickens Cross to Other Side ” (front page, Oct. 22): PETA is proud to see that its hard work behind the scenes with Bell & Evans and other companies to encourage implementation of this new, less cruel form of slaughter is finally coming to fruition. By carrying out a slaughter system that greatly reduces the suffering of chickens, Bell & Evans and Mary’s Chickens show that animal welfare and good business go hand in hand.

The National Geographic channel has an amazing new series that starts on November 7th, 2010. It’s called Great Migrations , and as the name suggests, it follows some of the most intense migrations in the animal kingdom. The National Geographic Great Migrations team spent two and a half years in the field, traveling 420,000 miles across 20 countries and all seven continents to bring this ambitious production to television.

From the DutchNews.nl. Dutch researchers carried out 592,665 experiments on animals last year, a 2.5% increase on 2008, government inspectors said on Friday. The increase was largely due to new EU rules on chemical compounds, which have led to an increase in testing on rats, the inspectors said. More than half the experiments were carried out for academic research and one third of those were for medical research.

This looks like its for farming of livestock, not medical research, but that's bad too. Research on animals is research on animals. From the High Plains Journal. Gov. Mike Rounds wants a biotech animal research facility built in South Dakota. The Argus Leader reports that Rounds announced Sept. 28 his intentions to build such a facility in the state during the Livestock Biotech Summit at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.
