Welcome to Pink Bird Weekend!

10,000 Birds

'For some reason pale red is an extremely attractive color when it is applied to feathered creatures. Why? Who knows? What matters is that pink birds are amazing. Whether you like big wading birds, parrots, finches, wood-warblers, or any other kind of bird you know that when you see one that is pink that you will remember it. There is just something about pink birds that make birders take notice like no other color on a bird.

Birding Argentina – Planning Stage

10,000 Birds

'Plush-crested Jay. Birding outside my home country is expensive but the current black-market for the dollar exchange rate to the Argentinean Peso help us save money. Also we found some cheaper flights going to Santiago de Chile and leaving from Buenos Aires so we decided to put together a birding trip to take advantage of all of these savings. After reading many trip reports and searching the weather patterns we decided to go during the southern fall just after memorial day weekend which is a

I and the Bird: What is a Vulture?

10,000 Birds

'That vultures get a bad rap is something of a given. There’s no getting around the fact that they’re weird looking. Birds are supposed to have feathers and birds without feathers look incomplete, like they left home with shaving cream on their ear and toothpaste spots on their shirt. Of course, this raptor pattern baldness exists for a good reason, which is another of the distasteful aspects of vulturine biology.

A Kokako called Duncan

10,000 Birds

'New Zealand can generate some interesting yard birds. We may not have huge numbers of species, but we can find some real specialties. I’ve managed a number of globally endangered or vulnerable species in my own backyard, from Saddlebacks and Stitchbirds to the irrepressible Kaka (which I’m listening to right now). This isn’t too surprising I live a hundred metres away from Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, and birds spill out.

The Mystery of the Red Munia

10,000 Birds

'To all but the greediest rice and spirulina farmers of Southeast Asia, any member of the genus Lonchura is a joy to watch. The munias, or mannikins, or silverbills, as the genus’ members are called, are finches belonging to the Estrildidae , and the 40-odd species range from Africa throughout South and Southeast Asia to Australia. The Indonesian island of Java, which I was both lucky and happy to visit a few weeks ago, is what 5 species of munias call their home, the White-capped Munia ,

Color Me Roseate

10,000 Birds

'Ah rose, the color of swanky gardens and rampant optimism. Rose by any other name also appears prominently in the plumage of some very perky birds. Rosy , a proper adjectival form of the word, describes a selection of finches from the genus Leucosticte. Of the four rosy finches, lovely earth-toned birds anointed with stark pink around the wings and lower parts, three ( Grey-crowned , Black , and Brown-capped ) are found in the western United States.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of May 2013)

10,000 Birds

'How’s May migration treating you so far? We’re early in the month, but many birds are late compared to last year, at least in my part of the world. Then again, migratory birds arrived very early last year. So I frankly have no idea what to expect. Feels slow though… I headed up to Lake Ontario to spy my first Caspian Terns of the year.

Birding at low tide

10,000 Birds

'Broome has huge tides and it is very hard to explain or for someone to understand the extremes unless they have experienced it for themselves. With a tidal movement of up to 10 metres (over 32 feet) in height there is a tremendous amount of water coming and going during these tides. Areas of reef that would otherwise remain covered will become exposed and the birds will anticipate the chance of feeding in areas that are beyond reach at lower tides.

Looking Forward to Birding Fallon, Nevada

10,000 Birds

'… where the Spring Wings Festival will be held from March 17–19, 2013! The good folks at the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority extended an invite to 10,000 Birds to send one of us bloggers to the annual birding festival held in this town about an hour east of Reno. Everyone else is otherwise engaged, or my hand went up first, or both. Either way, I’m extremely excited to be attending my first birding festival, and very grateful to the organizers for covering the expenses.

Another Bird From Humboldt Bay North Jetty: The Black Oystercatcher

10,000 Birds

'The Black Oystercatcher ( Haematopus bachmani ) can be found along the Pacific Coast of North America from Alaska to Baja California. Click on photos for full sized images. I found these two on the North Jetty at Humboldt Bay foraging and relaxing on the rocky outcroppings. They forage on these rocky shores where waves intermittently wash over the mussels causing them to gape more often and therefore giving the Oystercatchers more opportunity to capture them with a quick jab of that orange-red

The Flight of the Burning Pencils

10,000 Birds

'Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Germany was not a birding nation, at least not by international standards. In the good old tradition of Stresemann and Mayr we were an ornithological nation, gathering systematic data on bird numbers and distribution of our regular breeding and wintering birds. Regarding the treatment of rare birds or vagrants however, we had barely left the hand axe stage.

Less(er Goldfinch) is More

10,000 Birds

'As fun as it is to chase a rarity (and I’m a convert once again, it is fun, especially when you finally catch up with it) there’s always been an envy in my heart for the people who find their own. Chasing requires luck, persistence, and attention, but it does involve one advantage over regular birding – you know, not just what to expect, but more or less exactly what you are looking for.

Jamaica Birding Trip 2013 Part II

The Crossley ID Guide: Raptors – A Book Review

10,000 Birds

'What is it about raptors that fascinates so many people? My work colleague Jim stops me at least once a week in the hallway to ask, “See any interesting hawks lately?” Sometimes, I’ll reply with a story about the sparrows found in a local grasslands preserve. Or, I’ll wax poetic over a Hooded Warbler. But no, Jim’s eyes only light up when I talk about the Red-tailed Hawk that observes feeder birds from the top of the pine tree behind our building, or the Northern Harriers that in fall kettle ov
