'No, you’re not going crazy. This is the second post on 10,000 Birds about hummingbirds at Catarata del Toro in less than a month. Such are the risks you take reading a blog written by birders who sometimes go birding together. Patrick’s post was excellent and informative and we certainly can’t let that stand! People like you might start thinking that 10,000 Birds is a reputable blog or something.

'It must suck to be called “ Brown Prinia “ Try as I might, I can’t think of a name that implies more boredom and more unattractiveness, and is less apt at attracting the interest of birders. From a birder’s perspective however, this is both a shame and a blessing, as I will show below based on my observations of the species on the island of Java in November.

'I can’t wait to be in Florida! The 18th Annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival is less than a month away and while we don’t have snow down yet here in New York City I am pretty sick of cold weather and could use some warmth and Florida sunshine! Hopefully, you’ll be joining me at the festival and if you are I thought you might like to know which field trips I am co-leading so that you can sign up for all of them.

'I have participated in something like twenty Christmas Bird Counts since I started birding in 2005. My first count was the Albany County Christmas Bird Count in December of 2005 and I can remember seeing Ruffed Grouse (that I flushed after slamming the car door in my excitement and newbie-ness), being extraordinarily bored when we had to count a very large mixed flock of Mallards and American Black Ducks , and having delicious, body-warming chili at the compilation dinner.

'Greenland is the world’s biggest island taking up more than 2,000,000 km2 of the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. Greenland is a beautiful place with a rich flora and fauna, and the Greenlandic birdlife is especially fascinating. Thankfully, travel writer Mia Petersen has offered us the inside scoop on what makes birding Greenland special. There is a total of 235 different bird species in Greenland, most of them are migratory birds with approximately 60 species breeding within the land.

'There are probably a few people right now facing the dilemma of what gift they should buy to impress a female friend! In the north of Australia right now the Great Bowerbirds are also trying to impress some members of the other sex, but rather than venture near any shops they are busy thieving! This particular bower that we visited this week was constructed following our last Wet Season and has grown substantially over recent months.

'So many people devoted serious time this weekend to acquiring gifts for family, friends, and strategic acquaintances. Hopefully, each of you found time to give yourselves the gift of a decent bird sighting or two. I tried to rustle up some Short-eared Owls down at Nations Road, a notorious haunt for these magnificent beasts. Curse my rotten owl luck, I didn’t see a single one, but did manage a pale Rough-legged Hawk.
