'Irazu is the name of a volcano in Costa Rica. It’s sort of stuck between San Jose and Cartago and since it’s a volcano, it doesn’t stop at dominating the skyline. In fitting with proper volcanic decorum, it must loom or lord over a nearby populace with either a hint or a fistful of menace. Fortunately, for the moment, Irazu’s menace is diminished to a very welcoming hint.

'This is around the time of year I expect to start seeing the Calliope Hummingbird ( Selasphorus calliope ) at my feeders. Click on photos for full sized images. The Calliope Hummingbird is the smallest North American breeding bird 1. The males arrive on breeding grounds before the females and, according to their range map, they probably breed here in Shasta County.

'Sometimes you get incredibly lucky and get a wood-warbler that feeds at your feet. Today was one of those days. A couple of Pine Warblers were being incredibly cooperative at Forest Park, the sun was shining, and I had my digiscoping rig with me. Numerous times the birds came so close that I could not focus. I actually decoupled my scope from the tripod and lied down on the ground and got some shots that way.

'Signs of spring are evident everywhere winter once held sway. Actually, signs that winter won’t release its icy grip so readily are also apparent… my traditional Easter family hike was canceled on account of snow. Sure, we could have survived the blustery flurry, but I’d rather hide until the last remnants of winter blow away! Our travels this weekend took us on the New York State Thruway, which passes through Montezuma NWR.

My desktop simply can’t cope with the number and size of images that modern digital cameras produce, and this meant that I was finally able to start sorting through my many photos I took on my trip. 'In February of 2013, I wrote a piece outlining my thoughts on which exotic bird species should be added to the American Bird Association (ABA) checklist. My number one choice at the time was Egyptian Goose ( Alopochen aegyptiacus ), an adaptable sheldgoose from Africa that was rapidly becoming established in peninsular Florida. In 2014, the Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSRC) voted to add this species to the Florida state list.

'The Ancient Lake Junin has its own flightless grebe, rail, and frog. It is big and highly variable when it comes to accessing bird habitats. Luckily, there is a resident birding guide who can make finding the local specialties easy. After Lake Titicaca, Lake Junin is the second largest and the highest large lake in Peru. Located at an altitude of 4078 m Lake Junin draws water from an approximately 1800 km2 catchment area of the puna zone of Junin Province in central Peru.

'I’ve just returned from a trip to Israel and I feel like I’ve run 300 miles in a week…in the blazing sun…uphill…with no water…and carrying a one hundred pound sandbag. In reality I’ve returned from filming the second Champions of the Flyway Bird Race. And I had it easy. Compared to the 135 participants of this, arguably the most grueling 24-hour birding competition in the world.

'Last month woodpeckers, this month penguins. Some are cute, some are dignified (and royal!). None fly, most are curious and social, which probably contributes to our cultural perception of penguins as one step away from human. They are software mascots, cartoon characters, animated film dancers, children’s book heroes, zoo celebrities, and documentary film stars.

'Last Sunday Grant was able to leave work in the afternoon and I had researched options of places we could get to within one hour of the city of Melbourne using public transport that would offer us some birding opportunities.
