Birds and People: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

'It took me a while to wrap my mind around the concept of Birds and People , Mark Cocker and David Tipling’s book that, in 592 pages, explores the intersection of just that—birds and us. I’m not sure why. It’s not like I had forgotten lists created with friends of ‘songs with birds in the lyrics’, my personal favorites being Sondheim’s Green Finch and Linnet Bird and the Beatles’ Blackbird.

Fancy Feasts (For Fabulous Floors)

4 The Love Of Animals

'p>. I’d like to introduce you to one of my two most favorite males on the planet: This is Cyrus. And yes this is the first thing I see every single morning. A fluffy Maine Coon with no sense of boundaries. All up in my grill. Like my husband says: ‘He doesn’t even care.’ After he walks all over me and eliminates all hope of just a few more minutes of sleep, he trots off to his #1 hangout spot.

Drones: The Next Thing Birders Will Be Arguing About

10,000 Birds

'Amazon had a brilliant press release on Cyber Monday 2013 about using drones as a possible delivery service for their products in the near future. While many people were saying, “OMG COOL” others were thinking “that’s too Big Brother-ish for me” and a few said, “Oh hey, wait, what about birds?” Based on the press release date, I assumed it was just big talk and way to drive people to Amazon to shop on Cyber Monday.

Red-necked Phalarope, Globetrotter Extraordinaire

10,000 Birds

'Let’s say you’re a bird wrapping up your breeding season in the north of Scotland—where do your thoughts turn when winter beckons? If you’re like most, you head southeast, meeting up with your continental cousins near the Mediterranean or Arabian Seas. But at least one Red-necked Phalarope has a different idea of the ideal winter getaway, and a huge cache of frequent-flyer miles.

On Board for Birding History

10,000 Birds

'2013 was an excellent year for me as a birder. I reached two of my personal North Carolina birding goals this year. Of course, neither of them involved seeing Ruffed Grouse in the state, incidentally, which is a goal that still eludes me. Perhaps the most exciting was that I was finally asked to be a spotter on Brian Patteson’s Seabirding pelagic trips.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of January 2014?

10,000 Birds

'Keep your eyes to the skies for rarities. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you may make birding history ! The inaugural week of a new year tends to generate more birding excitement than any other time until migration. After all, to a year lister, January’s first Mallard is infinitely more attractive than December’s last.

How cold is it?

10,000 Birds

'Glad you asked. It’s cold enough in Chicago—where our high temperature for the day was –2 degrees Farenheit—that the polar bear at the zoo spent the day inside. It’s cold enough to freeze vodka. It’s colder than both the South and North Poles. Is this “polar plunge” that’s gripping much of the U.S. Midwest (and, soon, the East) bad for birds? Should you worry about their well-being as Holden Caulfield worries about the Central Park ducks ?

Carrie’s 2014 Year List

10,000 Birds

'As I’ve mentioned before , year lists are odd creatures: arbitrary but compelling, personal but competitive, commonplace but unique enough to be worthy, in some instances, of scientific interest. Up until now, though, I’ve never put my year list on 10,000 Birds. This year, I’m taking the plunge. As I’ve discussed , I’m hoping to add a Rosy-Finch or two to the old life-list this year.

Bottoms up!

10,000 Birds

'Every time I press the button on my camera, I hope that the result will bring a stunning image with the distilled essence of a bird or animal captured in millions of tiny dots. Most of the time, I know before I even lift the camera that the outcome will be less than perfect, but at least the animal might be turned slightly towards me giving the shot an intimate feel and the catchlight in the eye will set it off just nicely.

Call B for Birder or Waterfowling East Anglia

10,000 Birds

'A few winters ago, I went waterfowling in East Anglia. At local Internet forums, my friend Dr B. (sounds like some James Bond’s nemesis, doesn’t it?) discovered that the usual flock of several thousand Pink-footed Geese was wintering in the Broads National Park. Although a quite common bird of Norfolk, for me it was an attractive lure and a possibility of a lifer.

January Birding – Getting the Year List Going

10,000 Birds

'When the clock ticks over from 11:59 PM on 31 December to 12:00 AM on 1 January people kiss, drink champagne, confetti falls, and everyone celebrates. What else happens? Birders’ year lists tick over from whatever number they achieved in the previous year to zero. And there is little that a birder likes about a list that is at zero. Sure, there is unlimited potential and every single species can once again be counted, but, nonetheless, birders often put forth the energy to get that list b

Clare M’s 2014 Year List

10,000 Birds

'Once again it is a new year and once again I will commit to listing the birds I see during the year! We have no plans beyond Broome whatsoever at the moment, so we did put a fair bit of an effort in on New Year’s Day together to get a good start. There was one big problem that really restricted what we would see and that Cyclone Christine had just travelled down the coast from north of us and had brought flooding rain.
