Dreaming of Africa

10,000 Birds

It’s hot outside and inside… I am drinking the WHE brew, a Belgrade beer made upon a Neolithic Turdas-Vinca culture recipe (a great brew, my only complaint: bottles are girly-small!) and dreaming of a place where the heat is moderate, beer snake-cold and birds innumerable… Let’s say, where the average annual maximum varies from 22 to 24 degrees Celsius / 72 to 75 Fahrenheit and where some 700+ bird species – 24 of them endemic – are waiting for an intrepid birder… Answer

Lapwings, Loons & Lousy Jacks: The How and Why of Bird Names

10,000 Birds

Long ago, before I became the bird-name rancoteur I am today, I had an idle question. Why, I asked myself, did the loons come to be called loons in the English-speaking regions of North America when they were already known by the much more practical term divers back in the colonists’ mother country? As the title suggests, Lapwings, Loons & Lousy Jacks has the answer (it’s to do with the evolution of language and the fact that colloquial names come in and out of currency, but I ur

Back from the West!

10,000 Birds

After sixteen days touring the interior west and west coast of the United States with my family I am back in New York City. Well, actually, I got back a couple of days ago but between catching up on sleep, having to go to work, and dealing with a health issue this is my first chance to write about the trip at all. And, let me tell you, it was an amazing trip with gorgeous scenery, lots of cool mammals, and, of course, a whole big bunch of birds!

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of August 2016)

10,000 Birds

Maybe this is the kid in me talking, but summer beats every other season for me. It’s like Seals & Croft said: “Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.” Unless we’re talking about birding, in which case the jasmine in my mind– whatever that is –patiently waits for migration! In the interim, I hung around Lake Ontario watching Mallards oppressing American Black Ducks.

This Week in Bird News: Junk Food Junkies, Snacks on a String, and More

10,000 Birds

Look out below! This Bald Eagle, photographed by Corey, was after Blue-winged Teal in Florida, not Atlantic Puffins in Maine. But still. Did you miss your chance to see Angry Birds in movie theaters? Fear not—the film has just been released on DVD. (In the U.S., at least—international markets, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.) Probably not a good sign that it showed up in my local supermarket’s discount rack.

Pokemon and Birds at Maine Audubon

10,000 Birds

Set near the idyllic Atlantic coast, the Maine Audubon Center was sunny and bright on a hot, weekend afternoon. I was visiting with my mother, sister, and brother, and our attention was torn between two features: birds and Pokemon. Maine Audubon has certainly embraced their Poke Stops, Poke Gyms, and Pokemon. As we parked at the top of a hill overlooking a golden field, we were met by an interesting sign: “Come for the Drowsees, Zumbats (sic), and Pidgies.

Langi Crossing

10,000 Birds

The closest place to Broome to get yourself beside a river is about 140 kilometres/ 87 miles along the Great Northern Highway towards Derby. The Fitzroy River is accessible from the main highway, but even better is to get yourself onto the old highway and out to Langi Crossing. The old gravel road is not marked, but is very wide and you can see a gate on your left as you follow the road as it sweeps off to your right.

Neotropic Cormorant

10,000 Birds

“ Never eat anything bigger than your own head.” My dear demented mother’s advice often repeats on me after a large meal, but even the gluttonous Redgannet had to take his hat off to this Neotropic Cormorant after watching it trying to swallow a big Loricariid catfish on the main lake in Ibirapuera Park, Sao Paulo. Aquarium enthusiasts might recognise the plecostomus characteristics.
