Snowy Owl vs. Peregrine Falcon

10,000 Birds

'The video above, taken yesterday at New Jersey’s Stone Harbor Point by Tom Johnson , is pretty awesome. He was simultaneously filming with two different devices so the video starts with the wide-angle view and then starts over again with the closer look. As we have already mentioned here on 10,000 Birds, Snowy Owls are in the middle of a pretty epic irruption , and they are facing all kinds of pressure, from people harassing them to crows and falcons taking exception to their presence.

Birds and Bling

10,000 Birds

'Wildlife rehabilitators are not known for our bling. First of all: most of us don’t have much, because we spend all our money on gauze, antibiotics, and frozen rats. Second, even if we do, we have discovered through bitter experience that jewelry can either be snatched or, like very small guns, used against us. As for nice clothing … right! People who work with wildlife wearing nice clothes?

Snowy Owl Mania!

10,000 Birds

'As we might have already mentioned here on 10,000 Birds, this year is shaping up to be a historic year in terms of a Snowy Owl irruption. And because birders are often bloggers, the amount of material that has already been published regarding this invasion of big, white owls from the north is pretty impressive. Not only are there a host of blog posts simply featuring images of Snowy Owls but there are quite a few out there that tackle a whole host of different issues related to Snowy Owls.

A European Flavor to Queens Birding

10,000 Birds

'Though seeing birds that belong in the range they are in when you see them is nice, it is often even more exciting to see birds that are out of place. Especially if they are really out of place, like from another continent. Lucky me, I got to see three such birds in my home borough of Queens on Saturday! Only one of them could really be counted though.

Mango loving birds

10,000 Birds

'While everyone in the northern hemisphere is enjoying all that winter has to offer as far as food goes, we are currently enjoying all that summer has to offer in the north of Australia. We are lucky enough to actually have some mango trees in Broome as “roadside” trees, so you don’t actually have to have a tree in your garden to enjoy the mangos.

Preparing to Compile the Queens County Christmas Bird Count

10,000 Birds

'Long-tailed Duck is one of my favorite birds that we see on the Christmas Bird Count. For some reason, probably related to my having been exhausted after spending the entire day birding for the Queens County Christmas Bird Count, last year, after our compilation dinner, I agreed to be the compiler for the count starting this year. Participating in a Christmas Bird Count is tiring but essentially simple.

American Pipit at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge

10,000 Birds

'The American Pipit ( Anthus rubescens ) is described as a slim-billed, sparrow-like bird of open country. They migrate down from alpine and arctic tundra to lower latitudes in the non-breeding season (click on photos for full sized images). We are lucky enough to see them every winter in California where they take advantage of coastal beaches and marshes, stubble fields in the fall, and recently-plowed fields in the spring as well as mud flats and river courses.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of December 2013?

10,000 Birds

'Believe it or not, a Snowy Owl is in this photo! The first weekend of December is a good time to review your lists: year lists, shopping lists, naughty or nice lists, etc. How do these lists need to change for you to be satisfied with your year? More importantly, what are you going to do about it? Corey will be conducting some pre-CBC scouting throughout Queens this weekend.

An Owl-Inspired Haiku

10,000 Birds

'A pre-dawn visit to the Shawangunk Grasslands in Ulster County, New York, on Thanksgiving morning was well worth the long drive in the dark, especially as it was just a little bit out of my way en route to my folks’ house for Thanksgiving. Short-eared Owls are crepuscular hunters so if you want to see them you need to try either very early or very late in the day.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of November 2013)

10,000 Birds

'Now that Thanksgiving is over, we can ease up on the turkey talk. I do regret that I saw no Wild Turkeys this weekend, only subdued, succulently prepared ones. How about you? Corey had way too many birds to choose from for his Best Bird of the Weekend, with exactly 100 species for the four-day weeekend. Nonetheless, he had to choose one, so he went with Boreal Chickadee , of which he saw two in the Adirondacks on Friday.

The nature of the criticisms it received were varied, varying from identifying valid oversights of mine to people I’d be prepared to wage money hadn’t read a damn word I wrote, and actually some of the points demand longer answers than I hav

The North Wind Doth Blow

10,000 Birds

'The North Wind doth blow, and we shall have snow. And what will the robin do then, poor thing? He’ll sit in the barn to keep himself warm. And hide his head under his wing, poor thing. Nursery rhymes are not, perhaps, renowned for their ornithological accuracy. Nevertheless, Mother Goose does occasionally see fit to drop some knowledge of her feathered compatriots onto a youthful mind, as the above shows.

The Crossley ID Guide: Britain & Ireland — A Review of the Book

10,000 Birds

'I needed a book showing a Linnet. There is a Linnet at Kissena Corridor Park in Queens, and though I bird this park regularly, the Linnet, a bird regularly found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa and also named in a sweet song by Stephen Sondheim (Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Sweeny Todd) has eluded me. Maybe I had seen the bird and I didn’t know it?
