Eating a Pigeon

10,000 Birds

While wandering around my home borough on Sunday morning doing some post-snowstorm birding I made my way to Oakland Lake in northeastern Queens with the hope of finding Rusty Blackbirds to add to my year list. I circumnavigated the pond, got my blackbirds, and was about to get back in my car and head home when I noticed a bird-shaped form on the edge of the frozen lake against the phragmites.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of January 2017?

10,000 Birds

May I let you in on a little secret, just between you and me? A new calendar year doesn’t make common birds any more exciting to me. Obviously, I’ll savor a millisecond of satisfaction at my first dirt-common Canada Goose or Ring-billed Gull of the year, but once that moment passes, I’m back to scanning their respective flocks for newer, rarer, more exciting species.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of 2016)

Ash-throated Flycatcher

10,000 Birds

During my formative birding years, growing up in the high altitude desert of Eastern Oregon, flycatchers were just a really cool sounding bird, found only in whatever field guide I was able to check out of the local Public Library. After college, and now living in the densely forested areas of the Pacific Northwest, a whole new world of these lovely birds opened up for me.

Clare M’s 2017 Year List

10,000 Birds

Well, another New Year crept up on us once again and once again I will commit to listing on the website! This all started way back in 2012 and several of us continued on in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 and 2016. Just looking at everyone’s lists over the years you can see how varied our birding lives can be. As usual we got out and about on New Year’s Day and got the first one hundred birds onto the list, so now it will be a little harder or it means we need to travel beyond the town of Broo

Jochen’s Top 10 birds of 2016

10,000 Birds

The year 2016 was not a particularly birdy year for me, mostly because I didn’t get to go on business trips to Indonesia or Kazakhstan, as was frequently the case during the last few years. I did not see any lifers whatsoever in 2016, making it my first lifer-free year since around 2010. My trips abroad were limited to short family vacations to the Cote d’Azur during the first days of January and a week-long vacation to northern Tuscany / Italy in May.
