About gulls and panic

10,000 Birds

Do you ever feel that you do not know your birds anymore? I had that feeling today. Usually I do not start gulling before late October, but finding myself cut off from most of my local patches , I went gulling today, probably my earliest beginning of the gulling season at Ada Huja promenade , along the Danube inside Belgrade – ever. There were the usual 2,500 large gulls.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of September 2017?

10,000 Birds

Fall migration may want for some of the kaleidoscope colors adorning spring birds, but this time of year offers some of the most exciting birding you can ask for. If, that is, you get out and enjoy it! Some interesting avifauna has been popping up in the Rochester area, and I aim to track a few birds down this weekend. Corey becomes such a whirlwind of bird watching during migration that you could practically see him anywhere, although your odds are best around Queens.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of September 2017)

10,000 Birds

Anyone lucky enough to be high and dry these days can surely appreciate how many birds are on the move. Keep your bins handy, because you never know what you’ll see out there. I was thrilled this weekend to see a bird I haven’t encountered in nearly a decade; maybe American Pipit is common in your parts, but I had to scour the East Spit of Braddock Bay to luck into one.

Evil Twin Brewing Falco India Pale Ale

10,000 Birds

If there’s a “ trash bird ” in the world of craft beer, it’s unquestionably IPA. Like starlings and pigeons, these flamboyantly hopped beers are everywhere, aggressively crowding out more modest offerings in taprooms and in the beer aisle, and always leaving a bitter aftertaste, whether you want it or not. These days, it seems that every brewery makes at least one, if not several IPAs, foisted on the market in every imaginable form and permutation of hops, sometimes in the latest attempt to out-

Endangered Birds: 50th Anniversary for the Class of 1967

10,000 Birds

Before the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA), there was the Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966. The first list of U.S. endangered species was issued on March 11, 1967, under the earlier law, and those listings were ultimately grandfathered into the ESA. (Here’s the notice in the Federal Register.). The “ Class of 1967 ” includes 36 species of birds, and they range from those delisted due to recovery to those lost to extinction.

A return visit to Summer Lake Refuge

10,000 Birds

The first of September marked the start of quite a bit of travel for Jeanne and I. As all of you know, that means new birds to see with all this new territory visited. The first weekend had me visiting my hometown of Lakeview Oregon, and the many different areas that I ran around in as a kid. The first stop, Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge in central Oregon is without a doubt one of the most important stop overs for migrating birds on the west coats, no matter the species.

Big Day on Long Island: The Seatuck Birding Challenge

10,000 Birds

“I think I just heard a chickadee.” “Stop the car! This spot might be good.” *Doors open and shut. Birders spread out*. “Titmouse! I got a titmouse!” *Much jubilation and celebration.*. And so ended the birding day of the W. T. Hornadays, the Big Day team of Mary Normandia, Seth Ausubel, Stephane Perrault, and me.

Pied Heron near Broome

10,000 Birds

The Pied Heron Ardea picata is a small heron that we normally see each year at Parry’s Lagoon Nature Reserve at the Marlgu Billabong , which is over 1000kms/620 miles from Broome. This is the location where last year we captured a Magpie Goose being attacked and eaten by a crocodile and is excellent for birding. Another good place to locate the Pied Heron in Western Australia is the Kununurra Poo Ponds.

Birding Dilemma No.23 – Taking family for granted.

10,000 Birds

This dilemma comes from a visit to see my sister this week and being squeezed for time. She happens to live in the middle of the New Forest, 94,000 acres of heath and woodland, protected as a National Park and probably the UK’s best area in which to find Dartford Warbler. This little Sylvia warbler underwent a dramatic decline in the UK recently after a couple of especially cold winters.
