A Chance for Bliss

4 The Love Of Animals

A Chance for Bliss takes in and provides lifetime care for senior and special needs animals, as well as those others who are facing end of life circumstances. The purpose is therefore to provide a Forever Home for those companion and farm animals that have virtually no chance of being adopted due to their age or condition. This means that once an animal arrives at the sanctuary they become a permanent resident, and will remain until such time that they pass away, be that a matter of days, weeks,

Western and Clark’s Grebes: Poetry in Motion

10,000 Birds

Western Grebes ( Aechmophorus occidentalis ) and Clark’s Grebes ( Aechmophorus clarkii ) are probably best known for their elaborate courtship displays. These ceremonies are some of the most complex displays in the world of birds. We are fortunate in Northern California to have four lakes that support 76% of the total number of nesting grebes in California 1.

To the Editor: Re “ When Fashion Meets Fishing, the Feathers Fly ” (front page, June 29), about a new trend of inserting fly fishing feathers in hair: If you wouldn’t walk around with a cat’s paw or a dog’s tail dangling from your hair, please don’t fall for the rooster feather fad either. Like the animals that share our homes, roosters experience pain and fear, and they don’t want to die.

Minimising your cat’s stress when visiting the vet

4 The Love Of Animals

There are a lot of aspects which surround taking a trip to the vet that can make animals feel uneasy. Cats in particular are renowned for kicking up a fuss when it comes to making a visit to the clinic and some owner’s concerns for their kitties are rewarded with screeches and scratches. When you consider the circumstances behind this behavior however, your kitty kicking up a fuss becomes somewhat understandable.

Do Europeans Hate Birds?

10,000 Birds

The United Kingdom fosters what may be the most vibrant and fully-developed birding community on the planet, and there is at least one or two Germans out there who love nature deeply and truly. So why is illegal killing of birds such a widespread practice throughout Europe? “Birds are shot, trapped, caught with nets, glued to lime-sticks or even soaked with lethal poisons to lure and kill other birds… The creativity of those who break the law to kill a bird is appalling!

Black Skimmers at Cupsogue Beach County Park

Black Skimmers are another of those birds, like White-breasted Nuthatches , that people can’t help but like. They have awesome bills that slice through the water in search of fish, they bark like small dogs, they have a cool color scheme. It is impossible not to be amazed by skimmers as they effortlessly glide over the water, their bills cutting a furrow that will not be planted but harvested.

Gotta love the Alps

10,000 Birds

So, I have now been living in the Alps for about 4 years. And I cannot claim that it was easy at first. I grew up in South Africa where my garden list was over 200. I then lived in Central America where there were more bird species than my bird books (and my competence) could hope to identify. The Tirolean Alps are – well – rather barren by comparison.

The Great Egret

10,000 Birds

The Great Egret is a great bird. With a dagger attached to a head that has glaring eyes and distance from body as its other notable attributes, it is also a bird you don’t want to find sneaking up behind you in a dark alley at 3 o’ clock in the morning. Fortunately, the Great Egrets in this post were observed in broad daylight at Cupsogue Beach County Park on the same day I spotted these skimmers and the largest prey that I saw an Ardea alba take was a relatively small fish.

Bird Watching Botrosa Road

10,000 Birds

Continued from Birdwatching Rio Canande Reserve. On our final day of bird watching this northern Esmeraldas Choco Endemics site, we decided to do roadside birding on the renowned Botrosa Road. This road was constructed by Botrosa Logging Company to harvest the luscious forest which they started purchasing more than thirty years ago. As we drove down this road I had mixed thoughts about the destruction of this valuable endemic ecosystem.

Yellow-crowned Night Heron

Yellow-crowned Night Herons have a presence about them when they are hunting that reminds me of Buddhist monks. If “The greatest prayer is patience,&# as the Buddha is alleged to have said, then the comparison is perhaps apt, as nothing embodies patience more than Nyctanassa violacea. I spent forty-five minutes in the company of the Yellow-crowned Night Heron in this post and it spent that time alternating between hunting and preening but it never even made an attempt to catch something

Gadwall Ducklings, or, Aaawww, Cute!

On a recent visit to Cape May Point State Park in search of an elusive Purple Gallinule I did not find my quarry but I did find quite a few photogenic birds. One of them or, rather, several of them, were Gadwall – a pile of ducklings with their mother. I am used to seeing young Gadwall at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, sometimes under less-than-ideal circumstances , but I rarely get a chance to see an entire brood of ducklings close enough to get some pictures.

Peasant: She turned me into a newt! Sir Bedevere: A newt? … … … … Peasant: I got better. The entire scene from which that bit of dialogue comes, in Monty Python and the Holy Grail , is one of my favorite scenes ever from a movie. The absurdity of mob rule is summed up well, I think, by the idea of a fully healthy human male saying out loud, as evidence of a woman being a witch, that “She turned me into a newt!

Bird blogging is a privilege, in that recounting one’s birding excursions is a lot more fun when an audience actually follows the action. Back in 2007, I tried to streamline my bird blogging workflow by establishing some expedient shorthand for trip reports.

The Spruce Grouse population in New York State is shrinking to near oblivion and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is on the case. Two of them are loathed by large portions of the population for their droppings and their aggression.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of July 2011)

10,000 Birds

Holiday weekends rank among my very favorite things, but they can be somewhat problematic. At what point, for example, is it proper to ask one about one’s weekend? Usually I ask about your weekend on Monday, since we all agree that Saturday and Sunday comprise the standard weekend. But Monday, technically a weekday, absorbs the properties of a weekend day during a holiday like the one we’re immersed in stateside.
