Subaru, Dog Tested. Dog Approved.

4 The Love Of Animals

If there is one thing that Baby the Maltese loves, it is going for a ride in the car! Just say the word ride and she becomes a fluff ball of excitement, ready to hit the open road. She even has her own dog drivers license (you can make one for your pup with the Subaru Facebook app )! Have you ever thought of what a dog might look for if they were buying a car?

What is the National Bird of Italy?

10,000 Birds

Italy has no national bird! How this sad state of affairs could possibly continue is beyond the ken of this bird blogger but it is certainly disturbing that such an illustrious country with such a rich history could lack a feathered ambassador. Some places on the web claim that the national bird of Italy is the “bluebird” but this is so untrue that it does not make sense.

Kaikoura in the Summer

10,000 Birds

Kaikoura, in New Zealand’s South Island, is arguably the best place in the world to see albatrosses and petrels. Whereas much pelagic birding involves arduous trips out to continental shelves with nothing but gulls on the way, you pretty much start hitting albatrosses a few minutes out of the little harbour and they keep coming for the duration of the trip.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of February 2013)

10,000 Birds

I don’t know about you, but I’m exhausted. Must be from all that shoveling this weekend. But when life becomes most inconvenient, I become most impressed with those who blow past those inconveniences to pursue their passions. How did you pursue your (non-Valentine) passions this weekend? The Best Bird of my weekend was a partially leucistic House Sparrow that added some flavor to an otherwise drab feeding flock.

Gazumped to Norway

10,000 Birds

Being part of the magnificence that is 10,000 Birds and getting to virtually hang out with some of the other bloggers can be entertaining and fun but occasionally there are downsides. I’m not referring to the increasingly prima dona-like demands of Mike and Corey, despite the repeated requests I can’t bring myself to address them as ‘Oh Great Ones’ if I have to send an email.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of February 2013

10,000 Birds

How I’d love to be pelagic birding in New Zealand right now! What could be ( better / worse ) than the last dregs of winter? How about a week during that winter when your kids are not in school? How ( awesome / less than awesome ). Where I live, schools are closed next week for winter break, which seems an awfully long time to celebrate President’s Day.

Peregrine Falcons at the National Wildlife Refuges

Peregrine Falcon ( Falco peregrinus ) at Delevan NWR (click on photos for full sized images). The name Peregrine means “wanderer,” and northern-nesting Peregrines are among North America’s long-distance migratory species, some moving 25,000 kilometers every year. I’m sure most of you know that the Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species because of the use of organochlorine pesticides, especially DDT, during the 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s.

To Tick or Not to Tick – Exotic Birding in Miami

10,000 Birds

The Carolina Parakeet was extinct by 1918 and extinct in the wild by about 1904. The USA’s only truly indigenous parrot was wiped out by a combination of factors, although direct persecution through hunting seems to have been the major contributor. Today, if you want to see parrots in the USA you need look no further than Miami. Nearly 70 species of parrots have been recorded flying free at some stage or another in Miami, including Hyacinth Macaws.

What is the National Bird of Jamaica?

10,000 Birds

The national bird of Jamaica is the Red-billed Streamertail , known colloquially as the Doctor Bird and scientifically as Trochilus polytmus. It is endemic to the island of Jamaica, which means that Jamaica is the only place in the world where the Red-billed Streamertail can be found. Let’s pause a moment and drink in the splendor of this marvelous hummingbird.

I and the Bird: What is a Falcon?

10,000 Birds

What is a falcon, really? There was a time we thought we knew. Based on their physical attributes and lifestyle, falcons enjoyed a very long run as a founding member of the order Falconiformes, along with the rest of the diurnal raptor-y type birds like vultures and eagles and hawks and hawk-eagles. But the secrets that lie within their genes eventually became public, and it turns out that these arguably most impressive of the raptors (though even that term is less and less useful) are not, i

These two sites can be visited from the beach town of Bahia de Caraquez which is a great place to visit. Unfortunately this place has been under lots of pressure from farmers who demand the fresh water for farming.

The list so far…time for a top up!

Over Christmas we saw a half-price sale on airline tickets to the east coast of Australia and thought of all the places that we have never visited and all of the possibilities for birding. We thought of the year list and the idea was in our heads… let’s go birding and camping and see what we can find. We already knew we were heading down the coast from Broome to the Pilbara for a few weeks work and we would see some new birds there, but the job was not going to last long and we shoul

Unfortunately, the arrival of the behemoth that is a scope with a 95 mm objective lens was timed rather poorly, coming as it did just before the blizzard hit the east coast.

Gifts of the Crow: How Perception, Emotion, and Thought Allow Smart Birds to Behave Like Humans

10,000 Birds

The single greatest challenge facing any book of science writing is balance. It is vital to convey the full nuance of the facts, but for most readers the conventional ways of communicating those facts — charts, margins of error, carefully delineated hypotheses — come across as dull or incomprehensible. Otherwise, there would be no science writing, everyone would just go straight to the journals.
