On either 10 or 11 October, depending on which day has the better forecast for birds, several other birders and I will spend all day – from pre-dawn to dark – on the hawk watch platform at Fort Tilden. Why? The 2nd Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit, of course! Last year we had a great time and managed to spot a pretty impressive 74 species and we have even more exciting plans for this year.

One of the most secluded beaches around Broome is the northern end of Cable Beach. Cable Beach runs for 23 kilometres from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek and the length of the beach can be traversed by foot or bicycle, but you do need to take note of the tides. Our tides in Broome are very large and the beach can almost disappear at high tide and huge areas of sand are exposed once the tide retreats.

This is a Dunnock. It does not usually rate high on peoples’ Western Palearctic wish-lists, but Prunella modularis is a dapper little bird with some fascinating habits. Of olde, it was known as the Hedge Sparrow to separate it from the House and Tree Sparrows. Now it is classified with the Accentors. Confusion with the sparrows is understandable, given the plumage and their tendency to feed from the ground.

Although the official date for the Big White Bird survey is on October 11th 2015 the organisers are happy to receive any information on Sulphur-crested Cockatoos and Australian White Ibis now anywhere in Australia. They would like to know the numbers of these species around Australia on that date and surrounding dates. These species wander far and wide and with the addition of wing tags they have been able to confirm movements as far away as Papua New Guinea.
